I use a tiller holding system consisting of a tackle made of bungee cord in a 2 purchase arrangement with a jamb cleat arrangement on the pulley. This goes from one stern mooring cleat to the tiller and on the other side another piece of bungee from tiller to the other mooring cleat.
If you use bungee you can overide the helm to get it back on course then let it return to the original settings. So enabling fine tune.
On my boat the tiller loads are quite light but unfortunately so is the boat so that movement from side to side will turn the boat. Having a fin keel it can't easily be left long without supervision but yes it is usefull to be able to lash the tiller.
