I have the opportunity to stay on a 40ft modern yacht in the marina of Las Palmas for a modest fee this January. It has shore power and some kind of heating. I will be on my own and am looking forward to a bit of relaxation and book reading. Anyone know this part of the world? Is this a sensible alternative to a cheap hotel? I am quite used to solo boating but I will be tied to marina for 2 weeks, is there any life/company/bars,etc in the vicinity? Any ideas?

Las Palmas, big and busy full of traffic not my sort of town at all. If you are "boat sitting" i.e. looking after it for the owner then surely you shouldn't have to pay a fee. mooring fees for the boat will be in region of 10 or less Euros a night depending on what the owners have arranged. You shouldn't heed heating I didn't in December. Plenty of bars/ restaurants along the marina frontage.
Lots of people hang out at Saylors bay.

Currently still sitting here in the marina, cabin temperature last night was 22c, plenty of nightlife over at las canteras which is the tourist side of town, a bit of a walk but worth it and some excellent restaurants over there. Some life around the marina bars but nothing too exciting. Hire a car for a few days and get around the island, for parking in the marina you need to organise a swipe card through the marina office and parking office, 10 euro deposit 5 euro charge however long for. Good beach just past the marina if you fancy that on a hot day or alternatively a very long beach at las Canteras about 20 to 30 minutes walk depending on your stride.

I am going to book this deal in the morning. It is a Bavaria 38 and he is going through a holiday website which will cost me approx. £250 for 14 days. Quite honestly this is a good deal for accommodation on a solo break from the grey skys of East Anglia and is more my style than a package holiday. I fully appreciate any response. Prob could use this as an intro to living the dream?
Anyone there after Christmas I would be happy to share a beer as a pretender in your lifestyle. Malcolm

If you are into scuba diving there is a reasonable amount of easy, quite pleasant, shore diving accessible from the local dive shops, hire cars are not expensive and as Scillypete suggests allow access to other bits of the island.

Just a little info, the local buses TITSA are very good and reliable, you can visit anywhere on the island, buy a bono ticket very cheap, Gran Canaria is a beautiful island, well worth a visit IMHO.

Do you know of any other berthed yachts for weekly hire?
Great idea much better than an apartment
Gran Canaria capital has an Opera House, a Concert Hall many museums and places of interest.
Much more interesting than PLAYA D'INGL???

Ripvan, why you want to know? Just paid the guy through a recognised website with a credit card so am hoping all will occur without a problem. Maybe its best I let you have details on return?

Curiousity and whether it would suit me and the good lady - the recognised website would do
PM if you'd rather

+1 on bus service TITSA very good and a pass can be bought for multiple journeys.Usually the bus stations have cafe bars attached(nice and clean and cheapish).Enjoy!

sounds like a reasonable deal for a winter break, not sure how it works as its not technically a charter, the owner is certainly going to cover their marina costs very easily with a few bookings as it is a cheap marina.

be sure to carry some toilet paper when visiting the marina facilities they do not always have any, alternatively you could always just fill the holding tanks on the boat :) hot showers are hit and miss as well, sometimes early morning is best and sometimes not.

by way of comparison my daughter has just had seven nights B&B in a five star hotel here for £350

We rented a boat in Las Palmas Marina last year for the week the ARC left. We booked it through Trip Advisor. Don't think it's still available though. It was a 40 foot catamaran. The owner had a few problems with the marina. I think it's an excellent way to spend time in Las Palmas which is a busy city with plenty to see and do.
