Larger x yachts.

Has anyone sailed the larger than 50 footers on long passages? They are swift but how fast would one get fed up with the motion?

What are they like?

PS: Please no full keel or skeg hung rudder discussion .

I have no experience of large X yachts on long passages but I have owned an X37 for three years. The boat is perfect for coastal and offshore trips in light to moderate weather and it is great fun downwind when it is windy. However it is tiring and uncomfortable to sail upwind in apparent wind speeds over 30 knots.

At an X Yachts owners meeting last winter someone gave a talk on doing the ARC in an XP45 or XP50 (I forget which) and he made the comment that it was not an ideal ocean-crossing yacht.

Having said that, X Yachts are fast and well-built and a huge pleasure to sail. So if I were looking for an ocean-going X and had the money I would go for one of the XC range which are pure cruisers and should be quieter and easier in their motion going upwind in a gale.

my own X-302 is too small to give a guide, but does sail very well around the Solent and South Coats.
but understand for long distance cruising woukd be a better option would be an XC ie a cruising version, a totally different hull to the performance range.

generaly all x- yachts are perfectly balanced and well boat.
 
I've got 3 days on an XP55 coming up shortly :-)

I'm looking forward to having a look around the factory as much as the sailing. My mate who has been a few times reckons the refurbished X Yachts look very appealing to those of us without the access to XP 55 money.

Don't know what the weather is like in Denmark during May, hopefully F4-5 and sun!
 
In 1993 I took part in the South China Sea race.The northeast monsoon was particularly fierce and lots of boats even 40 and 50 footers retired.We did too but my boat was Peterson 30 that was behaving more like a submarine than a sailing boat.There were many breakages including masts,one boom and somebody lost their rudder.An X 50 something went on to win the 650nm race in very adverse conditions.I'd say they're very good boats.
