So much for the shaft drive brigade rubbishing outdrives.

Caught a programme on Sky last night about the biggest (pre QM2) cruise ship in the world, and it uses outdrives !!!

Well they call them 'Azipods' but they look like outdrives to me!

I thought the QM2 used the same kind of 360deg outdrive pod, with a big electric motor driving the props?

No they have a different setup entirely, look like UFO's with blades hanging down - Voith-Schneider propulsion units, which can put propulsion into any direction by angling the blades individually

In a sort of similar thing, many years ago I worked on a big machine tool grinder that had 2 grinding wheels that moved on a hydrostatic bed, the grinding wheels were powered by 200 hp hydraulic motors.

These motors were (for their power) very small & light, I could pick one up.

Finally to the point, has anyone ever tried fitting a hydraulic pump to an engine & a hydraulic motor on the bottom of an outdrive ?
