To Conclude:
Thank you for the informed responses, I really am grateful to you.
I looked at various options - buying a new laptop, buying a refurbished Panasonic toughbook and upgrading what I have.
To cut a short story long - I ran a backup copy of everything and then upgraded from Window's 7 to Windows 10 which was painless if just a tad time consuming.
The result is improved performance but I am going further in that I've ordered an SSD drive and another 4mb of ram so that should sharpen things up a bit more.
Timezero works fine and the GPS dongle is fully functioning and normal - it even shows me that I am at home :giggle:
So - thanks once more for all your help

sounds like a good plan to at least try that first and you can always take the SSD and ram to the next laptop if you later decide to get a toughbook ;)(y)
