I want to use my laptop on board, at sea. Bt and ntl, my current servers, always say one has to specify a number to call from. Does anyone have info' regarding a server, at a reasonable price, pref' pay as you use, that will "fit the bill". ie Where i can plug into any 'phone, shore or mobile, at home or abroad, and pay by card or some other method than monthly fees.

Try Compuserve, they used to have a number to dial in most cuntries. It was quite a complicated system as I remember.

Good Luck

AOL has a number of different options for mobile ISP connection. I believe it just requires you to dial a new number depending on which country you're in.

Pipex has local numbers worldwide and works OK via a mobile (but of course, very slowly at 9.6KB). You can set up your email program (I use Outlook) to download message headers only, so you can see if you're interested before downloading the content. This avoids the problem of trying to read large attachments or HTML messages at slow speed.

see the DIAL service at http://www.dial.pipex.com/sales/

AOL is excellent for world wide use. There are published numbers for all AOL users for most countries world wide. I have used it throughout Scandinavia and UL from my mobile on board and have no problem (apart from the mobile charges).

I use a laptop on board with a mobile using aol and paid by monthly debit from a visa card. The only prob is I used to get a lot of junk mail and am now moving to Virgin.net. I have requested any reply be forwarded to my email address.

If you are going to be in one country for a while it is worthwhile getting a local pay as you go card and a local access number (you may need a shore address to get the phone).
If you are travelling around and using a UK mobile phone then you might as well use a UK ISP. I can recommend Calico, (www.cali.co.uk or www.ecosse.net) who offer free access and email accounts which I have used for about a year. It costs approx. £1 to pick up and send email with laptop and mobile phone. If you are near a cybercafe you can also pick up your email through the web as an alternative.

Try GRICdial

If your current ISP is affiliated to GRIC with an Internnet roaming account, then you can dial country specific numbers to access your ISP. The cost should just be that of a local call, but naturally will be more with a mobile.

I use Lineone as my ISP, I have one number for 24 hour access which I pay £14.99 per month, but when useing my Mobile and laptop I have another number, very slow but for E-Mail its fine a bit pricy when overseas, but its still worth it to keep in touch. there is however a faster system on the market but I think that only Orange offer it, although Vodaphone were offering, you pay by how much you send Kbs etc.Mike
