Laoptop or Marinised Computer?

I found several in a secondhand shop that sells everything! I gone to buy some drills they had and look at the other items from a workshop they emptied,at the cash desk i was leaning on computor bags! Each had an apple in it mostly white ones but 2 black as well,Im going to ask if i can bring mine back as i just cant see how to use it??

It seems very fast looks good but thats all!! Would have been wonderful for the boat it even had a DVD so i could watch a DVD, I tried but my DVDs dont work with apple??In theory its great and cheap!!

I looked on ebay.Fr ebay.de and ebay.ch and found apples selling for between 50 and 200 euros or rather no bids!!

Im sure apples far better than a pc faster it looks good and they make a 12 inch which costs less than the bigger screen models with is the opposit to the PC!!

I agree it would be silly to change the OS,later i will look for a mac forum and try to download some user instructions, at 14.00 ill ask if i can bring it back! But they normaly dont take stuf back!!The only thing someone who tried it said was that she had been writing letters on her mac,and it still took her some time to find mac wordsOr was it works???Anyway a letter writing prog, it also has sticky notes?

I saw them come be changed and go,but by my self after a hour i hadent found them nor opened apple words or work??Errr where is the controle panel to change the clock???Please

Anything else I can help with?

As for those things you bought in a 2nd-hand shop; you obviously have an eye for a bargain here is a link to a great deal on an ipod

I have had an email from a compny called Electrolube who have told me that they have a High Perfomance Acrylic Conformal Coating which will protect PCB's etc from the moisture, heat and mould which can be found in the marine environment. It is possible to buy it for £5.86 for a 200ml aerosol from

May be worth a go, opening up the PC/laptop and spraying it on.

Re: Laptop or Marinised Computer?

He -we use laptops on board a lot. this is typed on the apple power book I use for business. We have two cheap travelmate laptop PCs. One is boat dedicated for nav etc. This lives in a drawer, and has conection to a flat screen, so it doesn't have to see much action at sea. The drawer has cheapy 12v fan fitted. So far, this has been fine. We use a wireless keyboard and mouse (which drive me mad as I never turn them on the right order!) and now I just have to learn how to use the software.

Trouville. like Benbow I am amazed you've got a Powerbook for 100euros.
I would not be surpised if there is something seriously wrong with it!
However I have used an IBook on board for three years now.
They are designed to be treated roughly by students and have good batteries.
I am navigating using Maxsea v7 which was the last version to be Mac compatible.
Starting now I would use GPSNavX.com
Use Multimode from blackcatsystems.com for radio decoding software
The main problem with laptops IMHO is the power required to charge them and the fact
that they are best anchored to the chart table and not visible from the cockpit.
Money permitting I would have a waterproof cockpit chartplotter as well.
Gadgetitis is so expensive!

They dont cost that much new! just over the half price for am IBM x40.I took it back! and today someone asked me if it worked, when i said i thought so but had brought it back he rushed off to see if it was still there?

I was rather in stress as my beloved firefox had upgraded its self to 1.5.0.1 and crashed!! I couldent find why, nothing on my system, so with Opera 9.0 beta i was spending all the time i could on line trying to revive my FF!!

To be short i found some great old downloads 0.8 and firebird to use for fun with win amp 1.2!!etc only today i discovered that to install the latest FF without crashes and diaster i had to deleat all the extentions!!!!

Now ive made another discovery that all the old downloads dont come with an instaler, but in each file there are downloads for apple "which dosent need an instaler"??? Why?? Now i should have an apple!

A brand new one costs 700/800euros but a brand new travelmate 1.8centrino 60gig 512etc costs 500euros from the carrfour supermarket!

Anyway im really limited as far as power goes as i dont have an engine!!Solar power which is perfect except for rechargeing phones laptops which seems to take quite some power!!!

what you have iswhat ive been loking for!You pay extra for flash memory but it starts at once, the basic system from $350!
With wi-fi windows($105 or $155 for pro extra) my configerations came to around $800
Without BT (not installable with wi-fi and $100 extra for infa red it would mean a cable

Its a great system! But to late!! Now Acer which is a really well built laptop of fujitsu which isent,in the less costly laptops you can have 1.6+centrino 60gig 512megs ir wi-fi dvd (extra on the others) screen and key board for just $500!!!

The only reason i havent bought one for me is its far to BIG!!! I need a 10"or 12" screen laptop, which i have, which cost about$1800 for my ibm x40 sony and fujitsu cost more!!

A great system for a boat anyway.Just very expensive!!!

Soon we will have super computors as APPLE are going over to windows!!!!Their shares jumped 10% If only they made a user freindly OS!And user changeable batteries in their ipods.
