Hello all,

Just doing some research and if you had to take a sailboat from Lanzarote to Gibraltar (departing in the next 6 weeks) what route would you take and why?

1. Lanzarote direct to Gibraltar (as close to the wind as possible with tacks as required).
2. Lanzarote to Maderia and then across to Gibraltar?

Ok, bumping up as no replies and looking to head off before the end of August now. Jimmy Cornell suggests via Madeira....

Capnsensible is your man - he has done it a few times. In normal times we would have gone up the Morocco way in milder winds and called in to maybe Agadir and definitely Rabat to refuel, but in normal or higher winds our plan was head to Madeira and then decide as we got closer whether to tack straight for Gibralter or call in.

Yes, the winds will of course dictate it all, also the issue with the COVID 19 will not help as the situation is changing all the time so need to stay aware of any possible restrictions to avoid any delays.

I did it a couple of years ago i went to Madeira (2 1/2 days sail) then from Madeira to Gib 4 to 5 days sail. The issue is the winds the trades are from N N/E so you need to go N before turning right into the straights. I did 24 hrs due N from Madiera then turned right towards Gib. Watch the weather but straightforward. If in Madira dont miss Mozarts restaurant near bottom of cable car all you can eat 5 course with all you can drink for about 35 euros the food is also a work of art. You will not be dissapointed
