Hello, realise this question is probably a common and also difficult one, Im looking for a boat I can stand up in at least in the companionway and galley etc. Im 6'2" and have heard the Vancouvers 27/28 mid 80s were produced with increased headroom up to 6'4". are there any others of similiar size/class

Thanks

My Dufour 34 '74. (for sale if you are interested). I also am 6'2" and headroom was one of the main reasons I chose her.

Really difficult to get that kind of headroom over any usable amount of space in a boat that size. Various tricks to increase headroom include raised aft end of coachroof and lowered cabin sole, but there is always a loss in other ways. If you are looking at the types of boat you mention then headroom is probably low on the list of priorities if you value the other characteristics of such boats.

I'm 6' 4" and feel your pain. When I was buying my first boat in around 2003-2004 I hunted for something of about the size you're looking for and just couldn't find anything I could like and respect which also had headroom. In the end, I just ignored the headroom issue and instead ensured that the berths were long enough to lie flat without bent knees - believe me this is critical. To be honest, I got used to stooping quite quickly. I mostly used to sit down when below, unless cooking when standing in the companionway entrance with the hatch open.

For reference, I actually still made a mistake with my choice of boat, because I didn't consider the width of the berths as well - although long enough, on my previous boat the foot area was quite restricted, which causes hip problems.

I realise none of this helps with your choice of boat, sorry! It's just that having lower headroom than I wanted wasn't the end of world for me.

I'm 6'2", on our old boat, a Bavaria 38, I had plenty of headroom except for the heads, no pun intended

Edit, have just read your O.P.again and have realised this would not be the class of boat you are looking for, so not much help. Still you could always step up in class:D

Contest 32? We were looking for a Vancouver 32 but bought the contest 32 instead for considerably less cash and more internal space including headroom!
