Langstone harbour & Southsea marina

The staff are a great bunch of guys, the cafe is excellent and the Indian Restaraunt is even better plus a well known forumite resides there! ;) What's not to like.

I'm currently berthed at Southsea Marina in my Elan 384.

Nice marina, friendly helpful staff, and not pretentious in the slightest. Most people moored there are friendly and always willing to get a line ashore if you need it. The Bombay Bay curry house and Marina Bar do decent grub too.

My Elan draws 1.8m draft and i can only get in/out of the marina two hours either side of high tide due to limited depth of water in the nav channel. So might be worth bearing in mind depending on what you draw. The channel was dredged a couple of years ago, but it badly needs doing again.

Depth of water in the marina can be an issue +/-2 hours either side of high tide - a couple of times I've come to an abrupt halt when trying to leave the berth - Like the nav channel it needs dredging too.

Allegedly they were due a maintenance-dredge this year, but it's not happened yet.

Early last year they were hoping to get the use of the new dredger that Premier bought after it had finished at Brighton.

I thought dredging at Brighton was an ongoing permanent thing?

Hopefully they'll get the channel dredged soon, it comes up a lot in the berth-holders meetings, so they are well-aware of it.

Unfortunately because of the access issues, i'm berthing at Port Solent next year so i can get in/out whenever i want. Love Southsea as much as i do (apart from getting to the marina, the roads down that way are horrific, especially when the football is on), the limited access has heavily restricted my sailing calendar this year.

We always stop over there for a night on our lift-out journey. As others have said, we have always found it a very friendly and helpful place, not really like a 'chain marina' at all. Fabulous Indian restaurant and the bar/cafe below seems popular too.

Sheltered from the elements and they have a pontoon outside where you can wait for the tidal gate. Not sure about channel depth though.

I haven't been there for a couple of years, but as has been mentioned above, the staff and restaurant were excellent when I last went there.

Don’t assume Port Solent is 24/7 access. Look at the approach Chanel depths and apply spring tide calculations. We moved to Gosport marina because of access restrictions and now find ourselves aground on our berth at spring tides!

Useful thread - thanks. I’d been considering going there but I won’t now. Their website is very coy about the channel depth, which is surely the most important piece of navigational info for a visitor.

Duly noted, thanks. Ive been to Port Solent a lot this year, around 50 nights so far, with more to come. Ive been in and out right on low tide without too much issue, but depth under keel was zero in places. Not sure if it was on springs or not. I'll see how it goes over the next few months.

Either way, it's not going to be as limited as Southsea by a fair margin!

We visited Southsea Marina for the first time yesterday. We found the shallowest part of the approach channel to be 0.4m at chart datum. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants we have eaten in.

It's been almost twenty years since I was last there by boat.

For a fin keeled visiting yacht is Southsea Marina worth going to and/or anywhere else suitable?
We kept Temptress there for years as well as our previous boat. Temptress is 47 ft long and draws 7 ft 2 l. {2.1 m} we never found that to be an issue. Access was 2 3/4 either side if Hw
SPRINGS and 2 hours either side of neaps into the marina. We could access the holding pontoon anout 1 hour either side of lw neaps and 2 hours on springs... Great place.
