We're thinking of chartering in Langkawi in late November/early December. Has anybody been there, got any info etc? I've got the basic info but was hoping for some personal memories: favourite moorings/anchorages & types of mooring/recommendations for eating out etc.

Last request I put out for the Sporades last month was great, we had a brilliant week, [even the F8 gale],visited many of the places suggested by forumites, so thanks for that.

Have never sailed on Malaysia despite having visited numerous times. Most of our time is usually spent in Penang and KL.

Visited Langkawi last October. Langkawi Marina looks OK but not achieving its potential. As is so often the case the majority of visiting yachts anchor off and save a few bob. Royal Yacht Club is much busier and more attractive.

I was in Langkawi last year and had a great time. I wasn't on a yacht, but rather a great big ship but I wondered round the water front a bit.

Food - take your choice. Its all good as far as I remember. Dinner including drinks and as much as we could eat was always about £10 - no matter how expensive the restaurant etc. You can eat a lot cheaper, but the place won't be licensed.

Lots of good places to go to. Take a taxi to the temple with snakes, or the Buddhist temples, or the peak (reminiscent of Hong Kong!) Its cool on the top and there's a great country style restaurant to have lunch in and a couple of temples to wonder round. The funicular railway to get there is a treat in itself....

One memorable moment was being driven the wrong way up a dual carriage way in a bicycle rickshaw by someone who was about 70 years old and very happy to have the customers. The fact that we were in front and facing the on coming traffic seemed not to bother him on the back pedaling for dear life.

Not visited Langkawi by boat, by ferry from Penang. A very nice island, the marina looked good but was nowhere near full when we went. The cable car to the high peak runs from close to the marina and I believe is the longest single span cable car in the world. Quite an experience.

The street food is good probably best for actual local dishes and cheap as chips. The Bon Ton is a lovely restaurant out beyond the beach district at Cenang and compulsory for a visit, best at sunset, not cheap but much the best. Take insect repellant. Good wine list. There is an indian restaurant called Little India in the middle of the beach which is good . The Rastah bar is a fun place for a sundowner on the beach. We were based at the boat yard out of the water so can't give you much guidance for anchorages etc but there are loads of inlets, come to think of it there's a nice Thai restaurant built amongst the Mangroves called Barn Thai.
Kuah, the main town is a bit disappointing, lots of duty free shops selling all the kind of stuff you don't really want but the Yacht Club is good and lots of cruisers stay there. There are evening markets opposite the main Mosque but I can't remember what days.
Pulah Payar is fun snorkelling and diving if you fancy it, loads of tours there, not sure if you can just turn up and do it yourself but you probably can.
Hope that helps, not bang up to date it was 6 years ago I was there but I doubt it's changed that much.
 
I visited Langkawi to survey 2 cement kilns a few years back. Beautiful place, but I guess you knew that anyway.

Many thanks to all those who replied, unfortunately, having decided to book, there's a complete lack of yachts to charter, apart from a 43' Scumsail @ £6k for 2 weeks!! A bit much for 2.

Now trying to charter in Thailand, but still waiting for replies.
