Heron Island dredge.jpg

Due to flooding and massive deposits of silt I am now effectively landlocked!
I am having difficulty establishing who is responsible for dredging, EA claim it’s the council, the council claim its EA and so on.
Has anybody had any experience of this or privately dredged?

The cut is just downstream from Caversham Lock if anybody fancies some good silt.

If its not part of the Navigation you will find that the EA are not interested. If however they believe the silting may exacerbate flooding you may be in with a chance.

I know someone who may come and blast the silt away using propellor wash. They use a small Tug. If you want their number PM me.

Blimey: I've frequently thought that I must 'take a gander' up there just to be nosey (I'm at T&K). That's really bad luck....hope you escape soon.

With the Thames being a muddy river and with the river levels we have had for so long this year I think we are going to find quite a few silting issues this season.
Fortunately its very forgiving stuff at the speeds we do on the river but does nothing for your cred if you pitch up on some. Can we all we post locations and report to the EA any shallows we come across to save a bit of embarrasment at the very least. Tow ropes at the ready.:)

Hi Steve: it's open but restricted. As you exit, there are scaffolding pipes sunk into the silt along the starboard side of the narrow entrance to mark the restriction. It narrows the channel by about 6 feet. Plenty if room still but one at a time instead of two lanes.

Cheers

Simon could get interesting if a barge/narrowboat try`s the charge into the entrance from upstream whilst someone is commited to exiting then?? Do you think they will get it dredged out to full width again?? is Ceil [spelling] still working there?

You're absolutely right: shame there isn't a fixed webcam to watch that one! I cant imagine them not dredging it: the sign at the gate to the boats sems like a temporary warning about the silt and to avoid it. If I recall correctly it was worded in a way that implied 'here we go again...soon have it fixed....watch out for the moment'

Don't know about Ceil: I've only been over there 2-3 times since the New Year due to the river levels and havent been into the shop/office.

Yes, Ceil is still there, spoke to her last week when ending our 20 years at T&K.

Ever since the new marina was built to make way for the Rowing Lake, the entrance has silted up with every flood. Seeing the river overflow into the lake was quite something. Then soon after, the dredgers were brought in and all normal until the next time.

Thank you all for your replies.

Byron - PM sent, thanks.

Watson - Come and see! If we are in the garden then a cuppa may be on offer or some vino depending on the sun.

Boatone - Submitted, thanks.
