Okay Lady Jessie. Reply to your original response 'Gold Plated' - wasn't it? Dogs & cats are examined and given tick & tapeworm - fact or fiction. Please - your comments would be welcome if backed up by facts.
No I'm not paranoid and I don't think that the vast majority of people are. The destruction of indiginous wildlife in the UK not european mainland is the issue, Back that one up as well - please.
Don't fool yourself, or become compacent. I'm probably more aware of the pitfalls than most, I love animals in general and also know that the cessation of quarantine restrictions in the UK was financially driven.
Your idea that a Pet Passport Scheme (EU) is the answer to all ills is at best ill advised. Untill Rabies is eradicted, not just terrestial rabies, but bat rabies then we should all be aware.
I'm not paranoid just 'google' rabies - just one case in a human (seen) would change your mind.
I agree with all the 'anti' quarantine legislation & again I'm not paranoid BUT please look at the wider issues. Europe is not Rabies free and dropping pellets in the hope that wildlife will consume them will not eradicate the awful disease. Only strict controlls of pet movements may make the difference,
Again, I am with you on the annoying rules & regs BUT if it saves the UK's wildlife then I'm all for it. Not Paranoid, honestly /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]This is a fact: the UK 'special' Pet Passport differs from the EU standard in that it has tacked on requirements for 'ticks and tapeworms' medication and a vet examination of same within 48 hrs of entry. In addition, you can only enter at a limited number of ports.

The term 'Gold Plated' to describe the UK tendency to add onerous rules to EU standards is actually not my own but was coined by CBI. They led a campaign some years ago when they highlighted this annoying UK tradition of often implementing 130% of EU rules and then blame the EU when the resulting legislation becomes difficult to work with. Gordon Brown promised to address this when he was at the CBI yearly conference 3 years ago. I have not seen much result of this promise yet.....

In summary; the 'Gold Plated' UK rules addresses 'ticks and tapeworms'. Not rabies. Are you seriously suggesting that UK wildlife would be 'destroyed' by ticks and/or tapeworms if the Pet Passport rules were harmonised across the EU?

This is getting rather stupid LJ. If this had been written late last night then I'd have thought you'd been drinking! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It seems that you misunderstand what I have written. Personally I do not have a problem with any of this!

Where on earth does it mention that t & t would cause UK wildlfe to be eradicated --Pe leese be serious.

I lived close to a large area of common land in the early '70's when a dog, that had been released from quarantine, was found to be rabid. The dog had been walked on the common. Every creature on that common was destroyed! All dogs in the area were required to wear muzzles. Quarantine was stepped up from 6 - 9 months. Now I only state that this happened & I have seen some of the plans that were put in place should this happen again. It's not my paranoia, believe me, it's just not wanting to see this happen again.
BTW you do not mention the blood test - that is not required by the majority of European counties either!!!!

France, Italy and Portugal Netherlands Belgium and Switzerland were considered rabies free in 2006. There has been an extensive programme in several european countries of using oral vacines against rabies in wild populations, and this has been shown to be effective in pushing the rabid frontier back, all these countries that are now rabies free still accent the standard european pet passport rules and clearly do not feel they are puitting their rabies free staus at risk by so doing.

Like many I do feel that our present system actually makes us more vulnerable to those who break the rules.
