Hi,
has anyone got any expierience of these engines, on a sealine 305 I am looking at they have been used in 140hp format connect to drives, know that Lancing ford are heavily used commercially but I don't know anything about them as pleasure craft engines.

Hi i am not sure these engines where fitted @factory,if retrofitted check instalation very carefully,however they are a sound engine if a little dated m m 1.
 
They were retro fitted but so I am told it was by Lancing Marine, I am assuming they replaced a pair of petrols but apparently they have kept the original legs which worries me a bit but I suppose as the petrols were probably 210hp there should be enough spare to cope as long as they are geared properly, they are currently being rebuilt profesionally after running with the engines for the last 8 years.
Have not viewed the boat yet just made a few enquiries as it involves a long journey and a lift in to go any further
 
Gearing may be the issue here. Petrols will rev to around 4800rpm so the legs and props would have been set up to work up to these revs. If the diesels only rev to 3500rpm for example, you could claw some of the loss back by changing the props, but you may need to change the gearing in the legs to get full benefit from the fords.

Lancing are a good firm, why not give Mike Bellamy a ring. If they fitted the engines, my bet is that they are already set up pretty good.
 
It depends which engine it is, some of the Ford transit motors are getting a bit stretched at 140hp and they start to chuck rods out the side of the block, not sure which model it is that does that, a call to Mike Bellamy would be a good idea.

I drove a 305 when it was new quite extensively, with the 200 hp motors, I would think with a pair of 140's it would be a little sluggish, depending of course on your intended use.
 
Intended use will be mostly Norfolk broads so less powerfull engines are a bonus but must be capable of doing Holland or Belgium a couple of times a year, happy for it to be a bit slow onto the plane and quite happy at 16-18 knots if it looks after the fuel.
 
I have a pair of Lancing 145HP Turbo diesels (fitted 2004) on Volve 280 legs. They replaced Volvo 145 petrols. The diesels are both very powerful and very economical. Remember that the gear ratio on legs is probably original therefore for tidal work it would be advisable to increase the pitch on your props.
With petrols I had 15x17 bt with lower reving diesels 16x21 are needed for open water and fast cruising. The smaller props are great for non tidal work. Change gearing in legs will be expensive I expect.
I was under the impression that Lancing Marine supplied engines but did not actually fit them.
 
Yup, fitted a pair of their FSDTI's at 140hp to a Sunfury.
a few thoughts...
Check the installation very carefully .... plumbing of the cooling water is tricky and must use the correct size piping (22mm IIRC)
The steering may have been changed due to the position of the turbos.
Mike Bellamy did a retrofit replacement for the oil hose to the turbo (if its ayellow hose it should be OK)
I can only speak from my experience, but I reckoned they were a great pair of engines, a little noisy compared with modern Dseries but always started 1st kick and ran really well. Fuel uasge about 10 galls/hr at cruising revs (3500-3600)

Props on 290 legs.... I went from 15x17 short hub with the old petrols (AQ170) to 16 x19 LONG hub then they needed Steel developments to add 2" of pitch and 1" of cupping to them. This gave perfect results for me (4000rpm at WOT)
Correct propping is essential to get the best out of them as the turbos come in at about 2500 rpm and should blow 15psi at full throttle (around 12 psi at cruise), if they are not reaching this, power will be well down. If the revs are ok but boost is less then the props are too fine. If revs and boost are down then check/clean out the intercoolers. (simple job)

Would really recommend that you talk to Mike Bellamy at Lancing, he knows his stuff! As far as I know they never did installations tho.

Any more queries, PM me.... BTW would think they were a bit bordrline for a 305 unless lightly loaded.
 
Got an email back from Mike Bellamy and I may be wrong about the installation it was just worded "we did put a pair into a couple of 305's" so maybe it was just supply, he did say though that it got onto the plane ok as long as it was lightly loaded, trouble is my other halfs and Mike's idea of lightly loaded are likely to be some what different.
