Before I do some irreversable damage, does any forumite have any thoughts on whether the lamination of important documents, such as the original VAT invoice for the boat, have any bearing on the legality/validity of the document? I appreciate that the registration document already comes laminated. I would have thought that all others would benfit from similar treatment.

As you say the Registration Doc (even Part 1, the old Blue Book) is now laminated, so I would have thought the VAT docs etc are fine. I have laminated the insurance certificate and probably will do other things since I just bought a laminator of my own, useful thing to have.

Isn't there always a risk of damaging the doc in the process?

I would have thought it better to seal the papers in a transparent sleeve that can be removed as necessary. Original documents are best left in their original condition, and that way there can be no suggestion of disguised tampering.

There is no damage as the laminate is only sealed around the outer edges and not the doc. The air is almost all removed hence no damage risk or dampness trapped. Conversely, using pockets - i.e. nirex etc. then air and moisture can be trapped and lead to sticking and mildew damage and worse still, the print will fade using this system. Go for laminate pockets every time.

Probably unlucky, but our office laminator has chewed at least one important doc.

I just have visions af a less than helpful French official deciding that he wants to see a document out of its pocket, with all the fun that would entail on a rolling boat.

I keep my docs in a pocket folder with no mildew and easy access.

Check this on your laminates, the ones I use actually seal to the document so that they can't be pulled off and the document altered.

All my documents except the vat certificate are laminated and the french authorities accepted them as ok last year.
