Laminate voids

I have recently received a surveyors report on a grp boat in Plymouth I am considering buying.

The report describes small areas of localised voids in the hull laminate running aft of the keel along the centre line and says that these were possibly caused by the peeling involved in an osmosis treatment.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this sort of problem? Any advice on how urgently this would need attending to or how much this sort of work would cost would be much appreciated.

I would have thought the voids were exposed by the peeling not caused by it.

Im sure the Surveyor will discuss it with you and advise on treatment needed.

Probably just need cleaning out drying and filling ,best to get expert advise first though.

The report was actually produced for someone else but has been made available to me.

The recommendation included is to employ a grp specialist to drill the areas and inject epoxy resin. The survey also found moisture levels to be low.

I have tried researching this problem but haven’t had much luck!

I would suspect that this originated in manufacture and is apperently not uncommon. Resin injection is apparently the usual cure. Holes need to be drilled to allow air etc & surplus resin to emerge. The right kind of resin (slowish setting) seems to be required as fast setting resin can expand in the cavity.

G'day Ben,

If this was built in two half moulds then joined, gaps are not uncommon and in most cases of no concern as the lay-up inside is quite heavy, and can be on the outside too if the two sides do not align too well.

Hope this helps.
