Which is why, if I'm on watch, I always set an alarm for 10 minutes. When it goes off, I have a good look around, then snooze for another 10 minutes.

Back in the days of tax-free red diesel, it seems that one of the more common calls for help around the Solent was a mobo who reckoned he had the fuel to get to Cherbourg and back, then ran into a bit of weather that slowed them down and increased fuel consumption to the point where they'd run out around Bembridge.
