La Route du Rhum

Fascinating to watch Gabart and Joyon battling it out so close to the finish. Only 17.8 nm between them and similar speeds. The updates on the tracker are now updated ever 5 mins.
Great also to see Alex Thomson leading in the IMOCA class.

Now revealed that Gabart has a broken foil and rudder, hence joyon catching him

looking at the almost live tracker, Gabart has pretty much been going round in circles for the last hour or two, Joyon now within a couple of miles and going much quicker

Just found some almost live video of Macif totally becalmed just off the coast , surrounded by small boats

In the last few minutes he does seem to have found a bit of wind

At the time of writing, Joyon is in the lead with 4.7nm to go and sailing at 6.1knts. Gabart is 0.6nm behind but sailing at 7 knts.

Really gripping stuff!

Nope - Joyon (Idec) has won.

62 years old and with the same boat that won the two previous editions (first as Groupama and then as Banque Populaire) it was the second closest finish (7m 8s) after the first edition where Michael Birch won by 98 seconds.

Am I doing something wrong? The coverage of the race is pretty poor apart from the tracker. Alex Thompson's website is days out of date. Is it just because I am not on twitter where there are little updates?
TS

He does a few video updates if you follow him on Facebook. I'm surprised they don't have them in his site alexthomsonracing. Anyone else noticed how swollen one side of his face looks?

I follow him on twitter, some good video, if not very often.

I went back and looked again and yes, his face does look swollen, probably got thrown around a bit.

He's lost some miles by refusing to gybe, but I'm sure he's aware of what he's doing :-)

Probably just getting a lay line to the finish now. I'm sure he will have some electronic gadgetry that told him exactly when to Gybe. He's got a great lead and on the same part of the course as the others so barring any mishaps it should be in the bag.

BoooooooooooooooooooooooooM AT gybes on the rumb line, we will see a real lead when the others gybe also.

He said on a video that his routing software called for 3 gybe but he’d decided to save his energy and just gybe once. Nice luxury to have that his performance in the first half of the race has earned him.

Another trimaran has capsized today, all safe and waiting for a tug to come from Martinique to tow him in

More amazingly, two IMOCA boats collided (although racing in different classes) ....expect it in the Solent, but in the middle of the Atlantic?

One skipper was asleep, boat crash gybed, other one saw him on AIS but had his screen on wrong setting and didn't realise how close he was until last moment, managed to make an emergency duck under but boats hit ...no material damage to either, extraordininary at that speed

Two boats going in the same direction crashing into each other means both skippers not keeping a good look out. Even if on opposite crossing tacks that is pretty unlucky mid Atlantic.
