La Linea anchorage

We heard from friends in the area that yesterday, at 0600, Spanish police gave instant notice to move to all boats anchored off La Linea stating that they were anchored in 'Spanish fishing waters'. As I understand the anchorage inside the harbour has been prohibited all year, I'm assuming this means the area to the north of the harbour at La Linea where boats had taken to anchoring.

Not unconnected to the current spat between Gibraltar and Spain methinks, and be warned.

Hola!

|If you think of a line drawn from the end of the breakwater to the marina jetty, that divides the harbour in two.

South of that line, anchoring has been prohibited for a year or more, probably when the new superyacht marina went public. Probably wont happen!

North of that line, boats have been anchoring and now is the season when fishermen drag the sea bed for shellfish, wrecking it for any other marine life, Briefly anchored there last monday, could see the fishermen getting a wendy on. The season for that will finish soon, suspect it will revert to normal. Am out again next week, will go over and check.

Sorry, its got nothing to do with the marina. Heresay.

Anyway, went across this lunchtime, no boats anchored as reported above. So I anchored for about an hour for lunch etc, no problem.

Interestingly, about 10 minutes after I anchored, another 6 or7 yachts turned up and anchored too..... No idea if they are still there, will probably have a quick look tomorrow.

CA member reports being chased off at gunpoint by over-excited officer!! Who quoted "political reasons".
This may well continue while Gib is in the news.
 
We were one of the boats 'asked to leave'. The Guardia were very polite, stressing that they were only acting on instructions from the Port Authority, but it was a shame to leave a lovely anchorage for the sake of four tiny fishing boats scraping every living thing off the bottom. C'est la vie I guess. We went to Cadiz for a few days and have just arrived back in La Linea. Not a boat at anchor so the restriction must be enforced quite rigidly.

Anyone know when the shellfish season ends?

How dare Spanish fishing boats want to fish in Spanish waters where English boats want to anchor.
 
The Spain/UK/Gibraltar issue seems to be a popular bandwagon at the moment, but whenever we've been anchored in La Linea, there's been something of a multi-national fleet at anchor; unless the story is that only the UK flagged boats were made to move, I can't see how it would be politically motivated. Indeed just the opposite: Why roust the yachts and risk them moving into a Gibraltan Marina to spend their £,€,$ rather than in Spain.

Interfering with/obstructing the local fishermen seems far more likely, over the years we've been asked to move for such in Turkey, Spain, Malta, several Caribbean islands and the UK and other than one request/demand made at 0430, we've always complied; those guys are only trying to make a living.
 
Updates!

Updates on this state of affairs from anyone on the know would be appreciated... I was planning on hanging about in La Linea for a week or two in October to wait for a window for the Canaries. There are few anchorages along that whole stretch where you can relax.

Hiya. The fishermen are raking the seabed for 'concha fina' which is a variety of clam. Very tasty, but does wreck the seabed like the scallop boats in, for example, the Solent.

Ive been trying to find out when the season finishes, but no joy yet, will keep asking and post here.

You'll be in a marina. The Guardia Civil are still enforcing the anchoring ban. It's possible to drop the hook for a few hours when the fishermen have finished for the day but an overnight is out of the question. However if you are under 12 metres you could try the local, very friendly, yacht club who charge 15 euro per day which includes water and leccy. Otherwise it's Marina Bay or the rather soulless Alcadaisa, both of which are reasonably priced. We're in Marina Bay for some last minute prep before heading to the Canaries.

Are you talking about the little marina next to the anchorage (entrance to port of main marina), the one where it's possible to tie up your dinghy and use the wifi? We are under 12 metres but have an inconvenient 6.95m beam, not sure they'd have room for us... I agree, friendly place though.

I guess we will be in a marina. Should be getting towards cheap season then though! How was the trip down to the Canaries Three Kings?

Yes that's the one although your beam might be a problem for them. Still in Gib....all the prep is done but the forecasts are rubbish for the trek south. We'll stay till some northerlies kick in.
 
We fly out to Barcelona in two weeks and then have a couple of weeks of boat jobs before we can high-tail it to Gib... Fingers crossed - for you - you're not still there!
 
Good weather for motor boats in the next 7 days.....

Fuel can be got in Mohammedia, Rabat, Safi, Essouria and Agadir. The last one is the best run ashore!
