Hi everyone,

We are crossing Biscay next month, but unfortunately will have to return to the UK for a few weeks to work. Does anyone know or can recomend cheap/safe marinas around La Coruna to leave the boat for upto a month?

La Coruna or maybe upto 100miles south would probably be OK.

Thanks

Camarinas.

A day sail south into the first of the Rias.

(last there 3 years ago so may be out of date)

Definitely not Coruna - far too expensive. Try Viveiro - new marina not in pilot book. Very sheltered, cheap, good local security etc. There are lots of other interesting, safe, good v.f.m. places too which I can probably remember the names of tomorrow, once the vino plonka has warn off.

This info is well out of date, as I last went that way ten years ago, but I'll give it anyway.
Most of the Spanish marinas are attached to yacht clubs, which are more like an upper class social club, or an American 'Country Club', than a U.K. sailing club. They are a 'Little Bit Suspicious' of visiting boats, having seen their share of people leaving without paying, hanging knickers in the rigging to dry, Etc. But hey do know that they make good money from visitors, so they may or may not want you.
The first port in Portugal is Vianna de Costella, and I think the marina there is a commercial one, and that would be my choice. It is a lovely town, very 'non-touristy'. and it has the most amazing 4 day festival around the third week in August. We called in as a 'pit-stop' on our last trip, and stayed three weeks!
The only snag would be missing the Spanish Rias, if you have to sail striaght past them.
I think that if you have the time, the best bet would be to sail to La Coruna, and then stop at the larger places in the Rias, like Villagarcia and Bayona, and enquire as to the possibilities where-ever you stop, with the thought in the back of your mind, that you will go to Vianna if you don't find somewhere to suit.
A phone call first to Viana, to make sure that they are not full, could make for peace of mind. Also, I don't know how easy it would be to get back from there, it is a bit out of the way.
I would give the contact No. from my RCC 'Atlantic Coast of Spain and Portugal' but for two things:
1. You probably have one yourself [it is well worth having],
2. Mine is packed on Iris Mary, and we sail for Portugal on the morning tide!
If only the tide was a few hours earlier, I could come over all 'Hornblower-ish' and say 'We sail at dawn'!

Try Portosino, near Muros, in one of the Ria's - good sheltered Marina. Don't know how to get there by land though. Last ther in September 2003.
