Kyles of Bute

There was a post on this a couple of weeks ago which got a lot of responses which should help you - title had Clyde in it certainly and was for domeone sailing out of Largs.

I was at Tarbert last weekend and it was stunning - I do not have kids but when reading about Tarbert in Scotland The best which is a good guide book it raved about some gallery in Tarbert which was good for kids and had things going on there esp. during the school holidays which is of course now. I do not know the name I am afraid which is, I appreciate. less than useful. Have never been aware of much for kids in Tighnabruaich but have been more interested in the sailing and pubs - some fantastic beaches for a lunchtime anchor if weather allows esp. the one near Ardlamont point (Ascog?)

I think the one you mean is along the road heading for West Loch Tarbert. There's a place up the hill that is interesting for children - its also a good walk over to the other Loch and the ferries go in there os if the weather is bad there might be another option.
Caladh harbour is a nice wee spot just by the Burnt Isles and also its worth wandering around Inchmarnock - Haswell-Smiths Scottish Islands book is very useful here.
I have a fascination with graveyards and the one in Campbeltown is interesting as you can read of Soldiers and Sailors who have perished and get an idea of how life was for generations of families.
Loch Ranza Castle is also a good place for children to explore and the distillery there might interest yourself.

I'm based in the Kyles, at Kames. Will be away from July 19th returning 9th August, so feel free to pick up Rebel's mooring. Should be more than adequate for a similar Ron Holland design!

Pratically - pontoons for the kids to jump on and off are at either end of the Kyles - Tarbert and Rothesay. Co-op store in Tarbert and large Safeway in Rothesay.

Rothesay has tons of attractions for kids and adults. Go into the Discovery centre in the Winter Gardens for complete info on what to do on Bute.

Tarbert is just a small fishing village, but nice enough to explore for a couple of days. Much better that Campbeltown though - except that Campbeltown has a swimmimg pool.

In between you can pick up free hotel moorings at Kames; Tighnabruaich; Colintraive. you pay for moorings at Rothesay or Tarbert (also pay for the pontoons).

Anchoring - there are tons of small bays
Glenan Bay opposite Tarbert is a favourite - only for the day unless E wind
Blackfarland Bay opposite Tighnabruaich - all weathers
Wreck Bay opposite Colintraive - except strong N'ly
Tons of others to explore Give Kilbride Bay a miss but Ascog bay is fine also give Ettrick bay a miss - both Kilbride and Etrrick are foul.

Consider Inchmarnock Sound, St Ninians Bay is lovely as is off the Farm on Inchmarnock

Hope you enjoy yourself - the beauty of the Kyles is there is always somewhere to shelter - and you can always get a sail.

Regards

Donald

Re: loch rancid ....

But tastes divine......

Who goes into Lochranza these days? I hate the place. Been 5 years since last there ... maybe should give it another go?

Been working night shift! Arrrrgh. Secret stuff that should make the share price rocket....!

Only got down to Kames on Saturday night - but well worth the effort - Sunday was a stunner.

16 days to go..... that's what it says on my screensaver..... till were off for 3 weeks.

Re: loch rancid ....

We're up there from around 24th July and am back in work on August 18th - by which time the boat has to be at Largs as we've discussed. Hopefully meet up. I was thinking to spend the first couple of days just doing some jobs that need finishing off but after that we'd like to go North initially then down the outside of Jura/Islay and then into the Clyde

Re: loch rancid ....

My brother is up west for 4 weeks at the moment in his Maxi 1000 'Sunfish' - Loch Aline last night. We plan to meet up with him in Tob monday/tuesday 21st/22nd July, then we will head to Canna while he heads to Kames. Depending on wind direction it will either be Skye and all points north or S Uist/Barra and all points west.

Give my right arm to be up there just now. Weather has been glorious all week and to continue right through the weekend.....

Re: lunchtime o\'booze ...

... was suddenly taken with the need to remind myself of the taste due to a considerable reluctance to read any more of this gov's sh*te. so off hame. I've a bottle of blended LochRanza and had a tipple. i thought it compares rather well with famous grouse etc ....

whilst there i reminded myself of the glories of a macallan ...

Re: lunchtime o\'booze ...

Never tried it but have a hankering for an Isle of Jura. Always hits the spot, whilst anything from Islay is horrible. Is this sacrilege?

Re: Highly recommended

From the posts below, it sounds that the very best place to go would be would be Glasow Airport for some nice duty free Laph-urgh, and head off somewhere sunny!

hope this helps.

Re: lunchtime o\'booze ...

The Jura is wonderful and the Superstition is magnificent. I cannot do the Islay malts at all.
Sounds like Para is in his cups just now - there's a sight to behold!

Re: lunchtime o\'booze ...

Never made it to Craighouses... maybe this year.
Remember I live in Dumbarton where all the Bonds are, and everyone knows someone who works in the Bonds.

Apparently the stuff to go for just now is Glenrothes which is about £13 for staff and £38 in the shops....

So how long does it take you to get to Kames from home?
The Distillery tour at Jura is great!!

Re: lunchtime o\'booze ...

House to house is about 1hour 15mins. Its only 66 miles, and is a beautiful run. Loch Lomond, Rest and be Thankful, Loch Fyne, Glendaruel, some of the most beautiful scenery.

Youngest daughter arrived in Glasgow yesterday on Prince William where she is a watch leader, been promised a shot up the mast tonight when we drop her off for another leg - to Poland via Orkney. Lucky girl. Brings back memories of 1975 of my time on the Malcolm Miller.
