I bring you the complete and definitive on-line yacht navigation course

this is all you need to know

However, before I start charging for this course I was wondering if I had omitted anything else yachtsmen and motorbotalists need to know

That's not navigation .. that's pilotage

Navigation is when you are in open water out of sight of visual aids. Although I guess these days you can create your own virtual buoys ( waypoints) anywhere you fancy them on your gps/plotter and sail from one to the next reducing navigation to "virtual" pilotage.

you put your own....

so you put your own objection down

this really is a complete course

a bit cheaper than the RYA one though

International system

I expect all coursework to be in imperial measurements then :-) depths in fathoms and "by the mark" distances in leagues etc and payments made in guineas ;)

we will be using the international system where we use units from all over the world

depth is in feet

sail area is square meters

distance from home to the boat is miles

temperature of the air is fahrenheit

temperature of the water is degress celcius

boat length is in feet

mast height is in meters

wine is by liters

petrol is bought by litres but used by the gallon

oil is pints

sweeties for night watch are in quarters

You really do need an ipad.
  • no need to look up chart symbols
  • no need to look up tides in a separate book
  • no need to key in waypoints
  • no need to clutter up a small boat with loads of charts
  • no need to run up and down stairs to look at the chart

and it has an excellent vido camera built in so no need to faff around with extra cables, batteries etc for those indoor shots.

Was with you there until you said sweets in quaters, by the 2 ounce gives you 2 options one chewie and one hard !

Spent a lot of time up and down that bit of sea.I would suggest beliving that you compass actually works.Going from bouy to bouy can be troublesome if you cannot find one......did you miss it? have you not reached it yet? has it been taken in (since 2006)

How is it with a bucket of seawater?

Depth is in:
(a) fractions of waders (East Coast)
(b) Multiples of max anchor warp (ROTW)

Sail Area is in multiples of mirror mainsails.

Distance from home to boat is children's wee-stops.

Air temp is raw/normal/sweaty.

Water temp is solid/liquid. (It's been claimed that once, on a Tuesday afternoon in August 1976, it was actually warm enough to *swim* in the sea off the UK!, but I was in Scotland at the time, awaiting the GreatDefrosting and TheEndOfGlaciation, so we waded through the icebergs)

Boat length is feet. (Except when rounding errors mean metres are cheaper, Mr Harbourmaster)

Mast height is, well, I've never cared about it much really, I know I had about 50 yards clearance under that powerline up the Medina, but it still scared me, I can tell you!

Wine is pipes or boxes.

Petrol is jerry-cans (syphoned out of motorcycles).

Oils is in 250ml bottles from Ocado (1st press of virgins)

Sweeties, well, I don't know what you give your night watch, but I know what else is supplied in quarters ;-)
