Any locals know if the Kovalam in Brightligsea is still open, I was told that it had been visited by immigration and was now closed. Some of my crew intended to eat there next weekend.

Contrary to rumour, the Kovalam was NOT visited by Immigration.

It was however visited by The High Court Sheriffs Office. From a friend who actually witnessed what went on "an unmarked van + two Police Cars arrived, after a brief exchange behind closed doors the Sheriffs started removing furniture from the Kovalam. A while later a person arrived a further discussion and the furniture was returned from the van to the pavement and (presumably) staff started returning furniture into the restaurant." A note had been placed in the window stating that they no longer serve alcohol...whether it is still there, I don't know, but will pop down there tomorrow morning and update.

IMHO, I think the Raj (a 10 minute walk from the Hard) is a better Indian, but that is just personal taste!

Have eaten at the Kovalam twice this season - last time about a month ago. Unusually empty for a Saturday evening ie spare tables. Food was as good as ever - service just as poor.

I think B/sea has been generally less busy this year apart from one bank Holladay when it was packed, maybe I have been lucky this year and always got a berth on the pontoon. The Blackwater also seems not so busy cruiser wise.

Not been in this year but thought that the writing was on the wall at end of last season when we (and others trying to pay by card) were told we must pay cash. Did Toad's crew get fed on Saturday night, I wonder?

Yes most of us went to Winkies (16 of us) and a few went to the Colne. I don't think any of us went Indian in the end.

Went in last night, I didn't notice the no alcohol sign.

I sat down looking forward to a curry and cold one after a great days sail only be told we don't server alcohol anymore. I asked why and was told it's an experiment in seeing what people like as they don't think people should be drinking whilst eating as it spoils the flavour of the food.

Needless to say I was not impressed. However, I was hungry after an active day and had it in my mind I wanted a curry so I grumpily accepted and had something. It was very quiet in there only one other customer was in. The Yachtsmans Arms though was doing a roaring trade!

Non alcoholic beer and curry just wasn't doing it for me. The food was ok but I'm going to find the other Indian next time I'm in Brightlingsea.

Kovalam has lost a customer I'm afraid.

This was documented on a Channel 5 programme last night called 'if you can't pay we take it away'.

40k allegedly owed to someone.

Its on playback for anyone interested about 15 mins from
the end.

They owed £40,000 to their food wholesaler. The high court bailiffs were wanting full payment of £40,000 or £10,000 on account and a payment plan. The owner was away on holiday, but a friend eventually paid £5,000 and that was sufficient to satisfy the bailiffs. I feel this is why there is no alcohol on the menu. The furniture they started loading would have only netted about £1,200 at auction. Somehow I cannot see them surviving this massive debt.

You can watch the program tonight on 5+24 at 9pm or on Demand 5 http://www.channel5.com/shows/cant-pay-well-take-it-away.
