The Kohler 11EFOZ gennie on our boat worked perfectly last season. I asked the marina service team to carry out an annual service on it which they did last week. Now it doesn't run. The engine starts and runs normally when you press the start button but as soon as you take your finger off the start button, the engine dies. Its not a fuel problem because you can keep your finger on the start button and the engine will run normally. So far I've had 2 different sets of engineers look at the gennie and they're flummoxed. It seems like something electrical. Maybe a relay or sensor?
Anyone got any ideas?

Do you have a fault code displayed on the panel of the gennie, (just above the start/off/auto switch) if so, that may quickly point to where the problem is. Does your boat have a remote starter panel for use in the auto mode? Do you get the same problem when starting from both locations?

There are quite a number of possible problems that will cause the symptoms that you describe but they are almost always related to one of the protection sensors (coolant level, raw water, oil level, temp etc etc). Typically these are by-passed during engine cranking to allow the engine to start, they then need to register a movement in reading within their preset numbers, if they dont then engine will be shut down to self protect. As you have just had a service this is where I would look first, what did they touch/move/disturb during the service, could be just a connection or a fluid level, hopefully will be. Good luck.

sounds like one of the sensors and it'll be a critical one as its not fast enough for the overheat. oil pressure? perhaps it has a sea water pressure switch? worth checking the impeller is actually there, if its just been "serviced"....

along with the dipstick, to see there is oil in the engine!!!, then check the oil pressure switch is still wired along wih the temp sensor on the exhaust if fitted.

Thanks to all for replies and sorry for not posting earlier. Internet connection not available everywhere we've been. The engineers finally traced the problem to a hidden relay with a faulty connection. Not exactly sure what that means as my Croatian is non existent and their English limited but I was just glad to get it fixed and be on our way

we're looking forward to the trip report Mike !

Ok will do. We've been following your recommendations, Bart:) Korcula, Polace, Lopud and now we're in Dubrovnik. We really liked Polace. Today we're off to Ston. We will miss Cavtat because of the day lost with the gennie but we've really enjoyed this cruising area
