Knowlesley Winches

Has anyone come across this type of winch? My boat has one - 2 speed chrome. I'd like to service it but havent worked out how it comes apart. There are 2 small holes in the top either side of the hole to insert handle and and another with a very small allen bot (2mm or so). Removing the allen bolt has no effect. Looks like I might need a special tool to fit across the 2 holes. Similar to a pin spanner used for angle grinders. Anyone with any ideas?

I've never heard of these winches but you sound to be on the right track. It sounds like the Allen bolt locks the collar in place and now you have removed that, the collar should unscrew. Try a couple of nails that fit the holes - hold them upright and slide a bar through to turn them.

Tugboat is right. The allen screw is imperial sized. Having removed the screw you shouldn't find the collar too tight that a gentle tap with a punch in one of the holes should start the anticlockwise unscrewing. You will find a similar construction to a Lewmar winch but with 4 sets of roller bearings. Mine gave excellent service with minimal maintenance for 30 years.

I had 4 of these winches on my last boat which gave superb service for 21 years and as far as I know are still there. The good news is that Lewmar pawls and springs seem to fit perfectly. Just service them occasionally and they will last as long as you do! 1 tip: To stop all the bits pinging over the side, peg a towel to the guardrail and lay the bottom edge on the side deck. Better safe than sorry!
