My lady friend is learning her knots and she tells me that the one she knows best is the hangman's knot.

Should I be worried?

John

I wouldn't worry until she has mastered a round turn & 2 half hitches or bowline as well - its one thing have a hangmans noose, its another being able to attach it quickly to a high point!!

Isn't there some bizarre law, like that of flying a Union flag without warrant about tying a 9 turn loose, actually thought it was 7, but the point still valid.

Or is it urban myth?

How many round turns? Should be 9 - less is sloppy and more is cruel.

[/ QUOTE ]Actually a hangmans noose has no turns - it has a small eye spliced in one end and is covered in soft leather for approximately 22" the free end is fed through the eye to form the loop or noose. The real trick is getting the victim to fall the correct distance. If they don't fall far enough before the sudden stop they choke to death but if they fall too far then there is a good chance their head will part company with their body (it HAS happened in UK prisons). Now the good bit - to determine the drop you take the persons weight in Lbs, divide that into 1000 and the answer is the number of feet of a drop needed.
So someone weighing 200lbs needs a 1000/200 foot drop => 5' someone weighing 100Lbs needs 1000/100 foot drop or 10' someone weighing 225lbs needs 1000/225 foot drop or 4.4444444' or 4'5" approx Easy when you know how....

I studied to become a hangman but the sods won't let me do the practical......... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
