Knocking \"newbies\" is bad business

All IMHO, of course - but we were all newbies once and more to the point, we were all novice boaters once.

Individual stupidity should be dealt with as just that.

Otherwise we in danger of making new folks unwelcome into out own exclusive cliquey club. Not good!!

Here Here,

Perfectly agree. But I dont think anyones knocking new users. Or daft questions, we all ask them and like you say, we were all new once. I just think the balance of Input and out put needs adressing.

Yes Dave, but we do sleep in separate rooms, honest!

It's still purring along and amazing the few lucky guests I have treated to a spin under the Humber Bridge.

Only downside is I'm still waiting for the hot water connection kit to come so I can get a warm shower. I'ts been on order over three months!

Martyn - I understand that you have recently changed your petrols for a single diesel.

Come and change my petrol AQ170 for me will you, I'll feed and give you lodgings but the costs and hard work are down to you.

Re: Knocking \"newbies\" is bad business

I think we could be close to a deal Adrian.

Feed+lodgings=hard work

But there's still the small problem of costs to sort.

Suggest you visit a local club frequented by soccer stars, then copy a recent corrie scene involving Todd and Nick, but blame it on the other party. Hire Max Clifford, sell your story to MBM. With any luck you'll make at least enough to buy the workshop manual /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: hlb

I certainly share your frustartion over input/output, and the frequency of "didnt some one post this question just the other day" seems to be increasing. However, I thought there was no such thing as a daft question, only a daft answer. Presumably, these questions are not daft to the one asking?
That said, seem to remember one persons habit of posting a question, and then over the next god knows how many posts, it became evident the original post didnt include 90pct of the detail. Maybe thats daft.....

Newbie frustration

Of course, it is fine to ask any old question. But like tico i think it a bit too wide a question when they ask if they should get a boat, what sort it should be for about 10 grand so the wife likes it, what's a flybridge, and are there any nice marinas that anyone can recommend on the way to the med, please? ok bit extreme, but on starting into a new hobby i think i mite just read a little bit about the subject first, no? Otherwise i think one can feel as tho yiou are sort-of helping them into a financial muckup. and it could not unreasonably induce a bit of a sarcastic response. Alan Harpie annual rag "buying yer own motor boat" is a decent start, innit? Or most any copy of Boats and planes for sale, or MBM etc etc.

Re: Newbie frustration

I have to agree. I still consider myself a newbie, but did'nt come near this place 'til I wanted to sell my first boat (ah yes, I remember the warm welcome I got when I was found out for using my first post to plug my website). I did 6-8 months of research, reading, mags etc before even viewing a boat - and by that time I new exactly what I wanted. I worry about these guys who start with a question here. I get the perception they just want to get going ASAP - I worry that this behaviour carries on to the water and they skip the essentials - training etc

I choose to ignore the posts that don't interest me though, and only post a question when I want a second or third opinion (or need backup for an argument with SWMBO!). But that's just my chatroom behaviour - each to his own.

Re: Newbie frustration

I agree with most of what you and the others have said; Tell the newbie with the dumb(to us) question to bog off(politely) and read the archives first, then ask for some specific advice if needed. That or an FAQ.

cheers,
david
