I was talking to a friend a while ago, and we got talking boating [ surprise surprise, being an anorake!!!]
and 2 things came up in the conversation.

1 thing was, the better you get the more spectacular the crash or bangs are!


2 was there are times when you have committed to an action, say a berthing or an entry into something, that on hind site you must have had a great deal of luck to have pull off!


Do you agree. ?

Avoiding yet more of the double entendres you leave hanging out there, the a swer is yes.

Example, Yarmouth, very busy sunny afternoon. Arrive to find place heaving. Told to berth between piles, which I quite like, only to find 5 boats rafted between pile A and B, and 5 boats between C and D. No-one is between B and C.

This means 10 sets of boaters can sit and watch at close quarters, say 20 to 30 people, most already have beers in hand.

Did I mention a stiff, tho not terrible, breeze is blowing 90 degrees to where the boat needs to be?

The right thing to do would be to pivot and go bows in to pile C, wind over stern, pretty good control. Once SWMBO and berthing chap have a line on, pivot 90 degrees with slight reverse, put on stern line.

That isn't what I did.

Parallel with my spot, I let the wind blow me into position. SWMBO did a prompt job, and bow line was on, but breeze was full on side of boat. I used bow and stern thrusters at the same time to move sideways upwind to stay in place while stern line went on.

As it happens, thrusters were enough, and as we moved sideways into position, and then stayed there miraculously against all the laws of boat handling, we got a gentle applause and smiles.

5mph more wind and I was in doo doos.

Being a party bore and anorak, I disagree.

You are great at boating when you don't get the bangs and crashes, but can progress at speed faster than anyone else, particularly when they have better boats for the conditions!
