Like you I have been watching most of it on Australian TV as I only got back to New Zealand from Hobart this morning. Had checked with my wife while I was away but all is well here on my return, just a few small tree branches down and a windswept garden!
We live between Wellington and the worst hit area further North (we are on the Tasman Sea coast) and seem to have gotten off lightly - just a bit of surface flooding around the region in the very low spots. Boat should be ok, no calls from the marina - we spend weekends on board (the boat is in Wellington Harbour) so will be there in a couple of hours so will see if that is so.
Last weekend we were on board all weekend and it poured with rain and wind was hitting 80 knots and running solid around 60. The big Incat Cook Strait catamaran ferry was stopped as were the big displacement ones - one had left South Island as the conditions were deteriorating and by the time got to Wellington entrance they had to hove to outside due to the conditions in the entrance - they also had vehicles come adrift on the vehicle deck. Is a storm in Cook Strait at the moment according to the forecast.
Have to concede 'twas nice when I passed through Melbourne last Tuesday (wouldn't have wanted an electric blanket at all) and Sydney was nice and toasty on Friday - tempting!
Jimi... for your wife and 3 daughters a big welcome.. For you ,I have to admit I have trouble understanding that language you speak on the BB sometimes... oh, ok on second thoughts YOU would be very welcome.. BUT, expect you to drink the worlds BEST cold beer, in our Club.. I will meet you at the airport ,..

Well if you want to bring your boat then NZ is the only option. As an immigrant you can import it tax free here as a personal possession - if you go to Australia you have to pay GST (10% of a valuation made in Australia) plus duty (not sure what it is now but used to be 20 something percent) on top of that. Australia won't even let anyone visit them unless they get a visa before departure (unless an NZ citizen, we are privileged in some way - perhaps they recognise our superiour culture?), so is much more difficult to migrate there.
What I am getting round to is that if you can qualify you would be welcomed with open arms here and if you don't like it, after a few years become a NZ citizen then you can go and live in Australia without going through their seriously stifling immigration hoops.
If you are considering it, the NZ Immigration Service have an excellent internet site, and send me a PM - I have done alot of recruiting overseas and have a reasonable idea of the immigration ropes. Even sorted out the bringing of those folk's pets, but you will find it difficult to bring your parrot though!
Jimi - likewise, I've just gone through the process of achieiving 'Residency' status here in NZ so if you want any advice let me know. But having said that, they are in the process on tightening up policy, partly to repair some rather 'broken' business processes and partly to repond to public concern about levels of immigration. The barriers to entry vary all the time dpending on need but it's rumoured that NZ could soon become harder to get into than Oz and no longer the 'cheats' way in!
No interest in living in Oz, but what are entrance requirements for NZ. Once looked at the official website, but not clear what acceptance criteria were.
