Where were we before the bunfight started??
Ah yes, Kipor generators....
I guess I was lucky... mine - a 1000 jobby - and 'jobby' in the scottish sense fits... was 'fitted' down the back of the boat and was used in dark and gloomy anchorages when the wind didn't blow and the sun didn't show....
Bought in Chile early 2007... first played up in mid 2007 ... mid austral winter... played up again in 2008... 2009... 2010.... gave up on it in 2011.... and left it ashore for any fool willing to take it...
Its only redeeming feature was that it took Honda parts.... ended up more Honda than Kipor...
Total POS..... guess I was lucky it didn't try to incinerate me....
And to state the converse, needing a suitcase genny of reasonable power I used these pages and a trip to the Kipor importers in Thame where I had a good look and checked spare parts stock and common warranty problems with the knowlegable staff.
Chose the 2600 model. Purchased in 2011 it gave excellent service, used frequently for an hour each morning when away from shore power to give a tank of hot water and kick the battery bank a bit. Also for powering 240v stuff when required-power drill etc.
It was an easy starter, ran smoothly and the smart govenor ensured its economy. It only used enough revs to produce the power required.
And, most importantly, the price was right.
£460.00 IIRC, the Honda 2000 was four times that. No doubt a better product, but not, I think, four times better.
The red case Kipors are not as good as the newer yellow case ones, according to a liveaboard canal boater I know who has tried most small gennies.
I never did anything to our Kipor except change the oil and use it.
Well pleased with an inexpensive good quality product. I sold it to a forum member through the for sale forum. I trust he is as satisfied as I was.
