... and on occasion my Kindle just froze in the process and I really thought I had broken it.

Some sites can crash the Kindle browser (The Telegraph site consistently crashes mine). The browser then doesnt play ball until you reset the Kindle (Hold the power button over for 15-20 seconds and it will reboot).

No such luck

They have changed the rules on this and you can now register you'e kindle on the UK site, pretty sure the browser will never be taken off, its just experimental so you do no expect too much from it, but it works to read news sites and weather and free all over the world (as long as you can get a 3G signal) well worth the money, also look out for refurb'd units I got mine from Amazon for £90 and it is brand new but sold as re'furbed, (useally means returned without being opened and you still get the same warranty)

Full of hope, I contacted Amazon UK who replied :

"I am sorry you are not eligible to transfer or register to the Amazon.co.uk Kindle Store. Moreover, we do not have any announcement about download expansion on our website so unfortunately I have no further information available at this time. As the Amazon.co.uk Kindle Store is only available to customers physically located in the United Kingdom with a valid UK invoice address and payment method. You can continue to shop our great selection of titles in the Amazon.com Kindle Store"

Sorry, but their "great selection of titles" doesn't include a couple of titles which I really wantes, and which are available on .UK. Also, the rising $ is starting to hurt.
Grrrrrrrrrr

You CAN transfer providing you have a U.K. address. Actually what they really mean is that you have a U.K. credit/debit card. My wife bought a 3G in the U.S.A and then transferred her account to U.K. She checked with Amazon UK before buying the unit and was told it was o.k. to do that.

Contacted Amazon.com, to find out why "experimental" browser doesn't work. Was informed
"Internet access using the Web Browser is not available in many countries outside the United States when using your Kindle's 3G connection; however most customers can access Wikipedia. These restrictions do not apply when accessing the Web Browser over a Wi-Fi connection."

So rather peed off that I paid the extra for 3G, and can't even get a weather forecast.
Discrimination against 3rd world counrties?
Would be interested to know how many of you can access sites other than Kindle Store and Wikipedia outside of the UK/US

Try this!

You may be able to successfully connect to Whispernet by changing the default wireless provider for your Kindle.

Visit your Kindle's Settings screen by selecting that option from the Home screen menu. When you're on the Settings screen, type eqq while holding the ALT key down.

When prompted to switch wireless providers, select "OK" to see a list of providers in your area. Please allow up to two minutes for Kindle to complete a search of available wireless providers.

Select a carrier from the list and wait for Kindle to return to the Setting screen and attempt to connect to Whispernet. If after two minutes you are still unable to connect or your signal strength does not improve, please repeat the steps above and select a different carrier from the list.
It allowed me to to connect 3g locally

So far we have used it in the BVI, St Barts, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. Mostly worked at EDGE speed rather than 3G and, just occasionally GPRS. According to the coverage page on Amazon ( http://client0.cellmaps.com/viewer.html?cov=2&view=intl ) it should work pretty well anywhere you might want to go (even Belgistan!).
