I was surprised to read recently that an internationally regarded yachtsman on a family cruise with his wife and young child thought it ok to kill and eat a dolphin as it "complimented our normal diet nicely". How gross.

I agree. I first came across this confusion between dolphin the marine mammal and 'dolphin = dorado the fish' when I lived in Florida for two years back in the late 1970's.I think you'll find he was writing about Dorado, a fish also called dolphin, as opposed to the mammal. But not having read the article/book I wouldn't swear to it.
You need to be very carefull with it as it is a common vector for Ciguatera fish poisoning...
.... and very tasty it is too. Its also called Mahi Mahi as well..

.....The meat is firm, white , highly acclaimed table fare. and bears almost no risk of Ciguatera......
Of course it's the fish, hardly likely anyone would be eating the mammalian Dolphin is it, let alone admitting to it?
Oh dear...Conclusion leapt to and Pavlovian reaction I fear.
jwilson, where please mate because I for one want to try it. They are fish,so what about the warm blood thing? That `smile` is an illusion, they are savage carnivorous animals who enjoy toying with their prey. Signed Jerry.

Nor am I too sure where you get the notion that they do it just for fun. Isn't that the same kind of anthropomorphic nonsense that you condemn when you describe the smile as an illusion? That `smile` is an illusion, they are savage carnivorous animals who enjoy toying with their prey. Signed Jerry.
