Had to leave there today due to infestation of three types of flying bugs.

In actual fact, did not get free of them until Harwich.

I attempted to eat one of my sandwiches again near Pye End
but about 20 of them got there first.

You have been warned !

i was attacked by killer lady bugs today at tollesbury :eek:

fasunds of the little blighters - had to beat a hasty retreat to the shop for a ice cream :D:D

drifting here.... but did anyone hear 'Ray Winstone' on the Secret World a couple of weeks ago - trapped in the bathroom because there was a ladybug on the door handle? hilarious!!

"I can get out - what if it bites me?!"
:D:D:D

After having to close up all the hatches in the evening due to midges, in the stinking heat, I have been looking for those candles that you used to be able to get which discoraged the noisy blighters, but cannot find them.

Perhaps our Dutch friends can help with the best techniques, as our problems pale into insignificance when compared with their inland waters.

yeah, some of us have had one on the birthday and christmas wish list for two years and still don't have one!

Bought one for 99p in the poundshop last week.
Only because my Feuerhand wick had burned out, and there was a spare in the 99p one.
Amazing, it works, but I am not sure for how long.

Thanks. I've tried a few outdoor shops with no success so (surprised that all chandlers don't stock a couple at this time of year). Will try the local camping shop tomorrow. Like the hurricane lamp idea.

Good website. Plenty of options there.

If I get some of the smaller ones, will I be able to light it down below, and then be able to leave the hatches open? Ie. how effective are they? I have flyscreens on the Lewmar hatches, but the tiddly noisy midges seem to get through, and it only takes one to stop you sleeping.

The factoryshop are also doing glass jar citronells candles, quite large for £1 each.... we have 2 of those too...

we first came across the candles when we took abreak from cruising and had a caravan , used them in ther awning to good effect .

also had a 12v bug killer that used to hang up from a pole .

camping & general had a stock of the candles back then , cant say about now tho .

Be wary of cheap ones. We had one a few years ago, and it leaked paraffin from day one. We only used it outdoors at the cottage, but on a boat it would be a right pain.

Thats why I said it hasnt leaked yet.

Feuerhand, still made in Germany, is the way to go. Really good quality.

Go to a pharmacy and by the anti-insect coils. They burn like incense giving off an acceptable smelling smoke and last quite a long time. Have used them here in the UK and in Greece - lit one in the cockpit and slept on deck every night with very few bites. Seem to be effective for wasps too.

Had a couple of nights anchored on the backwaters a fortnight or so ago. Didn't notice an insect problem but that's probably due to other concerns i.e. an engine that didn't work, faulty bilge pump on leaky boat etc ;-)
