I have a yamaha malta outboard on the dingy. Engine doesn't seem to have a kill cord.

Anybody got this and can tell me that it has and where.

If nit can one be retro fitted.

Thanks for help.

I used to have one years ago when they first came out, good OB. No kill cord on my one either which I found starnge. Dont know about retro I looked into it but didnt get anywere.

Yeh thanks reply.

No complaints about OB. Very good.

Son wants to start using dingy /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. May have to upgrade to one with a kill cord.

You can retro fit. The killcord is just a switch that joins the +12v supply (ie the low tension side) of the ignition breakers to earth (or equiv contact, if you have full electronic). If your engine has a red button stop switch, that does the same thing, so you can parallel wire a killcord switch to that

[/ QUOTE ]Well, having it serial rather than parallel wired would stand a better chance to work properly I guess...
...a bit pedant I know, but as discussed elsewhere I'm not alone /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] But probably wrong!

To the best of my knowledge kill swiches are "normally open" and close when operated to stop the engine. That being the case a second one would have to be wired in parallel with an existing one not in series with it.

However the best solution would be to replace the existing switch with a kill cord type. I am sure a Yamaha dealer would be able to supply one that would be a direct swap.

Whoops. Now that I come to think about it, you're right.
The engine is killed when the ignition is grounded, thus it's normally open.
...running for cover now...

I just fitted a lanyard killswitch to my 8hp yam, got it off ebay and it had 4 terminals, 2 for connect and 2 for disconnect so it would work for any setup, fitted the hole in the motor cowling perfectly, also had a stop button on the end that worked with lanyard attached.
Item number was 120305596815 if you want to try and find it.
