Together with 47 other boats we took some disadvantaged children sailing Friday, organised by Rotary club. Anchored at East Head and enjoyed a great display by CG helicopter and a couple of inshore lifeboats. Kids were great and all in all a very humbling experience. I know they were short of boats, so perhaps more forumites might join in next year? One of the best days out we've had and the weather gods were kind eventually.

First of all WELL DONE !

I would love to get involved in anything similar and I also know that my company supprtes similair events, again well done and let me know if I can be of any help in my area?

Tom

Yep a great day out - fantastic to see the smiles on the kids faces and see them enjoying a proper day out.
Made my day, one little girl that had such fun, she was determined to steer us back with us giving her directions;
she was blind, I had to go below, it brought me to tears..

Sadly I won't make it back for next years do, so maybe another boat can cover for me.

Ian

We were only a tiny cog in a well organised event, credit to the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians who made it all happen. I'd never heard of this until this year but this was their 25th anniversary. It was ETAP_Owner and IanGrant who put me onto the event- they have done it before.

Well done chaps. I have been on Kids Out events with Rotary in the past, but only land based. It certainly is a worthwhile experience for all concerned.

Presumably you had a carer on board with you, to supervise the little darlings (a bit tongue in cheek for some of them we used to take!)

Any liability issues?

Yes, we had a carer on board. Lovely bloke, kept a gentle hand on proceedings throughout. We had each of the kids on the wheel in turn, but we managed to persuade him to take the wheel on the way back in under sail. He loved it, which made my day!

A big big thank you to all Scuttlebutters who turned out on Friday, some who had sailed around to Chichester Harbour on Thursday eve. Without the support of regular boat owners the IYFR would be unable to stage, what is the biggest event of its type in the country!

Thank you Tom for taking the lead with your post today, I'm realy pleased you enjoyed the day.

Ian, sorry to hear the engine prob is not completely fixed.

Next year, with Anne getting more involed with the Kids Out organisation, I will be doing the advertising and promotion of the event, so look out for the posters and leaflets in your marina.

Thanks for getting me involved with this. One of the kids on our boat insisted on steering nearly all the way back. He kept lifting my hand off the tiller and asking me to give him directions. He couldn't stand to see over the cabin top. So apologies to the other boats for our eratic course.

Sorry I had to dash off on Friday but suddenly realised I could get the last of the ebb down to the entrance. I will be back next year.

I think you had a young lad called George, it would have been him on the tiller!

It was good to meet you.

I hear Phillipa had a good sail back to Gosport on Sat.

Hi all, I had a fantastic couple of days- big thanks to DJE for letting me crew on his boat, ETAPowner for getting us off our scuttlebutts in the first place, good to meet you all. Young George certainly got a thrill out of steering Close Encounter on the way back- even if it did mean we had close encounters with other boats because of it! Young Ian also got a kick out of identifying bouys as we went along, huge 'high fives' each time we spotted them! We also let them loose with the foghorn- with a very noisy result.
Cracking sail back to Gosport Saturday- can you pass my thanks on to John when you see him next please Stephen.

I'm available to crew next year....

Hee hee, we had a lad called Jack who rather enjoyed helming in his own dreamy way. He didn't want to relinquish the helm and sat close to it throughout so he could correct as he saw fit. I thought I'd accidentally engaged the autopilot during the tight turn into our berth but it was only Jack assisting...

I made it to the Rugby Club do on Friday night. I went back to the boat on Saturday afternoon to clear up and the balloons and streamers were still there on the backstay. A credit to your knotting.

No, I managed that cock-up unaided. The first of several over the weekend. Got to the point where my crew were wishing me luck whenever we came alongside, cheeky b***ers.

On Sat, 6 boats went over to Bembridge, Ian, your friends with Shiraz came along. We had a good evening in the Baywatch. Next year with more Scuttlebutters taking part, lets make it a Scuttlebutt rally!
