Kickback

2.2hp mercury marine 2 stroke.
Almost breaking my wrist with kickback on the pull start, what could be causing this and what is the fix. Just got this as a freebie and don't know anything about it.
First post so don't be too sore on me.

Is it starting and kicking back ? Or not starting and kicking ? …I’d be checking the gearbox perhaps. These are direct drive, as you’ll know.

Sounds like the ignition is too far advanced.

That small rotation determines that kickback is caused by spark, gas ignition, and burning well before top-dead-center (BTDC) piston position. If it were after TDC (ATDC), the engine would start, idle or run normally.
