Pissed off as well. Next time ask for the receipt first before offering any money. Law is covering you for denial of any payment unless a receipt is produced.

A common charging rate seems to be creeping in since the responsibility for fee collection passed to local government. We have paid very similar amounts in Naousa and Koufonisia recently.

As I have said so many time s now ,to the peorple who keep on about it ok to pay a 5 or 10 Euros to be on the quay , that it wont be long before the charges will increase dramatically and the time is near guys , we met friends in Mourtus who was charge 24 euros a day ( not a night ) this year , how long will it be before mooring buoys are laid in all the good anchorages .

Was heading for Kiato couple of weeks ago but after a chaotic canal passage (see post in mobo section) went into Corinth for a calm down. I wasn't expecting much, given that those before have consistently trashed the port. What a revelation!
Moored on the edge of the fishermans harbour. Everything clean and tidy. No gypsies, beggars or drunks or immigrant types. The town was buzzing with the return of the students after the summer, and there was a community party and dance in the square which ended at 11pm. Nobody bothered us or asked for payment.
We enjoyed being there so much we stayed on another night before motoring on to Galaxhidi.

Can I ask a personal question? How big is yours? Boat that is.

It's just a survey I'm doing to try to confirm whether or not owners of bigger boats get asked for money more than those who own smaller boats.
I intend to extend the survey to shiny compared to tatty if I ever receive the government funding that I have applied for for such important work.

I should think it Matter much hoes big or how tatty it look , and now with the collecting of money going to locals council , I can only see the situtration getting worst , and who to say these guys or women work for the council , any one can have a badge made up and buys receipt book for a shop .

Odd. There was no suggestion of any charge when I was in Kiato for three nights a month ago (26-28th Aug). I spent one night in the fishing harbour, but the noisy disco until 3am drove me onto the outer wall for the remaining two nights. There were only three other visiting yachts while I was there, and no-one was charged as far as I was aware. There's no power, but the odd tap here and there for anyone wanting dubious quality water.

Our previous visit was around that date too but we only stayed in the fishing harbour for one night and left. However, on this second visit the huge trawler which occupies the end of the harbour wall was in port so we went to the outer breakwater. Two boats got charged.

"THREE nights in Kiato"? Were you stormbound or something? It has the worst tavernas in the region! We sent back our barrel wine because it tasted strongly of metaldehyde. That was at one of the tavernas opposite the fishing harbour. Most of the menu was "Off" too!

The results of my survey so far say that you were ripe for the taking at 44ft and immaculate. I'd say you were jolly lucky to get away with only 20 Euro. Did you by any chance stand on the quay waving your electricity cable around demanding somewhere to plug your air conditioning in? My survey has also found that this can lead to increased demands on the pocket.

Are you suggesting that we scruffy it up a bit and maybe, perhaps keep it in Vlikho?

The advantage of driving a battered old Bertram is that nobody bothers us except charters and PanzerCats (there must be a Fatwah posted against us in PanzerCat HQ) . In fact I was thinking of leaving an old hat next to the mooring ring in case some posh soul felt the need to make a donation.

Spent 3 nights there in may stormbound and really got pestered by the Gypsies. My wife gave them a couple of Euros and they left us alone. Not a pleasant town or quay, thank god we never got charged.

What is your wardrobe like (the clothes in it not the actual wooden structure)? My survey has found that badly stained shorts with holes in can reduce the level of demands from chancers. If your clothes look worse than theirs they tend to leave you alone.

So naked would do the trick ?

Exactly my understanding of what is likely to happen - from conversations with various young, informed members of the Port Police.
No longer will PP collect money - the collection of cash will "be done by others", presumably the demos. The cruising tax (if they manage to get it past the EC regulations) will charge people for using Greek waters, the facilities provided by ports will be charged separately.
Probably, those who hop from port to port will find the charges escalating, but perhaps facilities will improve - those who anchor regularly might save some money. All in all, the low cost sailing people have previously enjoyed in Greece is probably at an end as the costs align more closely with other European countries.
However I think that all anchorages sprouting chargeable mooring buoys is a step too far in imagination- Tranquil Bay, probably, several of the Meganisi coves and some popular places in the Ionian. The number of anchorages (especially in the Aegean) and the capital costs of the tackle make it less likely.
At a guess we'll see charges for a 10m boat of about €20 - Fiskardo is one of the places I'd put a wager on. Just look at all those happy charterers - they'll not even give such charge a second thought.
