I plan to do this trip departing 21st Jan.KW,north coast Cuba, south of Bahamas bank, Haiti, Dom Republic, south Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico, BVI's. I would welcome any feedback from anybody who has sailed this route particularly at that time of year.

Re: Key West to BVI\'s

Did it three years ago. Slightly different route, came back to keys from Cuba then through Bahamas, Turks, Dominican Republic onto BVI. You must get The Gentleman's Guide to Passages South The Thornless Path to Windward by Bruce Van Stat. Excellent guide to the tactics required to bucking the trades. It can be hard work, but was a real highlight for us. Big sand cay in the Turks is simply stunning. That time of year you may also see the humpbacks mating off Dominican Republic. We left late December (Christmas Eve) from the Keys after Cuba. Pick a good window for the gulf stream crossings. As I say, can be hard work but well worth it. Have a great trip. Details and pictures on our web page under previous newsletters

I have passaged Biscayne Bay to BVI's at that time of year and the worst thing about it is it's all to windward. - Have you read THE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO PASSAGES SOUTH by Bruce van Sant? He has a good understanding of the route and makes very sensible suggestions..

I did it in February 1992. It is a windward slog but you get to see some interesting places. VanSant has got the tactics for battling to windward down to a fine art: wait for weather, go at night when the trades sit down, take short hops, basically.
The other way is "route 66": head east until 66 degrees west and turn south. Less headbanging, but you miss out all the good places. Some take this route down and then do the island hopping on the way back.
Good luck.
