Am I correct in inferring that it is possible to remove and replace the bar in this type of shackle with a punch?

I mean the sort of shackle, often used on halyards, which has an additional bar to retain it on the halyard when open.

... and if you stop punching the pin through before it drops out of the second side, it'll be easier to push back in again.

(Usually a 'coiled spring pin' or 'spiral pin' in the captive shackles rather than the type with a single slot..)

I have now tapped out the pin from the broken shackle I am replacing. It is a round bar, not split or spiral pin. I am about to order a Wichard replacement. Will its pin be split?

I am asking about this because I hope not to be obliged to remake the eyesplice in an age hardened halyard.

Thanks for the cunning tip to not fully punch out the pin.
