Scale... aye now there's the difficulty - in Argyll we have just the two sizes - large and then the standard 9 incher.

Whan Ah Wiz a wee Boy ma mither used tae sew me intae ma flannel undies at the end of Autumn and then unsew me in ra spring . Before that she used tae rub ma body wi a lump o'lard.
Ah used tae hae big tackety bits tht ah c'd slide oan ra pavement wi . an ah hid a braw tartan bonnet tae gae ower ma heed. O'er a' that there wiz a muckle tartan plaid, MacDougall of course, fastened wi' a buckle in the shape o' the Galley o' Lorne that my ancestors cam ower the sea frae Ireland in wi a bit o' Viking contamination etc . Ah wiz taught at an early age tae sleep in the heather or in a boat couried up in ma plaid and living aff oatmeal soaked in cauld watter . Ootwith a' that ah fund ma hairy legs quite an asset besides.
 
I like to wear my wheelhouse especially when engine and Ebberspacher are working. My warm glow is improved whenever I have to send the crew on deck. Sometimes cold wet rope things have to come into the wheelhouse but I try not to handle them too much.
 
Don't discount merino wool base layer, at least as good as synthetic and far more comfortable. Aldi did merino base layers for £10 last year. If you dont mind smelly feet, poly bags between sock and shoe/ boot work wonders. Also insulate your neck, lots of blood near skin here.
