At last Aquilo is back on her mooring after a complete engine rebuild. The delivery from Shoreham to Portsmouth was a motor sail upwind. After the Looe channel I encountered rough sees that repeatedly saw the bow underwater. Later I notice lots of water in the foward cabin and on investigating it seem to have eneterd through the hole for the cable from the anchor locker right up high at the back of the locker.

So here are my questions.
1. How do you stop the anchore rode multiplait blocking the anchor locker drain to ensure a quick emptying.
B. How do you stop large qualities of water entering the anchor locker
ii. How do I fill around the cable where they pass through the bulkhead right up high under the deck, access is really tricky.

Any ideas appreciated.
 
You could epoxy up the hole and put the cable through proper glands. Alternatively there is a kind of 2 part 'rubber' which you could use to make your own gland in situ but it could be messy if room is tight. Silicone sealant? Can you not get better access to the hole through the anchor locker? Drill bigger drains in the anchor locker and put in a raised grill to prevent blocking.
 
1. Put some kind of grille or spacer around the drain to keep the rope away from it. That way there is more surface-area of rope for water to come through to reach the hole. If the locker is deep with a narrow pointed bottom, a grille just off the bottom would work, or I've heard the suggestion of using a corner cut off a beer-bottle crate, where the plastic structure fills space while allowing water to freely drain past.

B. Don't think you can, really.

ii. Disconnect the cable and use a proper gland. Perhaps move it to a new and more accessible hole in order to do so, and glass the old one up. The glassing needn't be especially strong or well-made since it's not structural, so you should be able to shove it in place despite the poor access.

How about one of those plastic open mesh crates one sees on fishing boats, it should contain the anchor rode away from the drain ?

I found some thick soft malleable alloy sheet which made a lining for my anchor locker; this keeps things in place and prevents the ( already restrained ) anchor bashing the internal topsides when beating into waves.

As long as the drain in the anchor locker is big enough the crate or similar should drain the locker.

Must admit I don't like the sound of a link between the anchor locker and forecabin though, apart from a watertight removable inspection hatch and I would do my utmost to seal it, unless I have read it wrong.

1. Some kind of grating at the bottom
B. Keep it filled with fenders and rope - less room for water

Yes, didn't engage brain fully there. Was thinking of blanking off locker having anchor on deck on chocks or bow roller and using hawse pipe as sole access for rope/chain - bit drastic though.
 
I'm going to have an explore today, would a length of split pipe insulation work as a temporary seal around front of anchor locker lid? Thanks for all the advice.

Not sure i understand exactly where the water is entering into the locker
But anything that can stay in place and reduce the size of openings will help.

If the drain hole is below water much of the time you can also have water entering that way.
On fix for this can be a clamshell cover over the opening with the opening facing aft
