OK all you knowledgeable types. What are the pros and cons of keeping a boat on the water during the winter months at Itchenor? I'm toying with the idea.

Thanks

Dave

So glad you posted...we're in the same situation, we just paid for mooring in Itchenor Reach til March next year. Looking forward to being able to sail more, but wondering about the cons.

I await more responses with interest...

Sue

PS: Where in Itchenor? We're about halfway between Itchenor and Westlands.

If the boat is GRP and if you don't take her out for four of five months of the year then after some years - typically four or five - the hull moisture level is likely to rise appreciably. This might result in osmosis or simply reduce the value of your yacht on sale. You could consider gel-shielding her before the winter, that should help, or factor in the cost of a full osmosis repair, maybe?

I've been in the habit of leaving mine in over the winter, enjoying the sailing but I paid the price...and I'm about to do it all over again :-)

Con . . .always undecided as to whether to leave the sails up or take them down after a trip.

Against - Increased insurance premium

Insurance is an issue: I was with GJW for six years but then they wouldn't cover year round mooring in the Itchenor reach. But Navigators were fine about it. The Ferry service doesn't run in winter, but if you can get out on your own its a lovely area on a nice crisp winter weekend. I'm looking forward to it.
