Keep Turning Left.

DW seems a great chap & I love his films and his odd swipe at others.
The sailing must be fun & he can do that in his own time. But the hours and weeks of video editing look like hard work, so I'm happy to chip in to support this.
As many here have said, keep up the good work, KTL!

without wishing to comment on the issue debated here...what is the origin of this usage of "tap"? Is it a usage of Mr. Winter's own invention or does it come from elsewhere?

I'm familiar with the term "tap" as a verb where the subject is the recipient of resources from the object but not the other way round. Nor have I previously heard it used as a noun in this sense.

As far as I am aware it just refers to 'tapping the Paypal button' to contribute.

I'm sure you are correct that that is the etymology although it does (weirdly) imply the originator being someone who habitually uses touch screens: with a normal mouse or touchpad we would "click". Moreover the object of the action would be the button.

Mr. W seems to use "tap" as a a monotransitive or ditransitive verb with the direct object being a sum of money and, when used as a ditransitive, the recipient (i.e. Mr. W) as the indirect object. In fact you could substitute "give" or even "tip" for this use of "tap".

In his blog and forum posts Mr. Winter uses phrases like tapping a dollar or tapping $200 to him. Others on here have echoed this. This is grammatically different from tapping a button to donate $200. I've never heard this syntax before and was wondering whether it was used elsewhere or whether it was being used as an idiosyncratic brand differentiator like the double spacing thing.

I suspect some of the animosity expressed towards Dylan here is a consequence of binge watching not anticipated by Dylan.

Assuming production of a single episode at home takes 3 to 5 weeks elapsed time, then in Dylan's mind his direct cajoling for donations might be stated 3 times in a two month period. Given financial pressures post the Google fiasco such cash calls would seem reasonable at the time. In contrast the binge watcher will be labelled as a freeloading manky old bloke 3 times over 90 minutes.

I watched an episode of this purely because of this thread. It featured the chap visiting various yards in the Solent in search of a Westerly. When he came to the yard he had booked moorings at, he and the yard owner proceeded to talk about all the boats on the hard standing in a pretty offhand and derogatory manner. We all see and comment on these untouched yachts and abandoned projects ourselves in private, I just found it somewhat ungallant to be doing that publicly.
Not that he did anything wrong of course, it was factual, but it did put me off looking at any more of the videos. That is probably my loss by the looks of the popularity of his work, but there it is.
Good luck to anyone who is taking the time to show the fantastic hobby/lifestyle/sport of sailing to the masses, be it for free or paying.

For the avoidance of doubt, my question about the use to the term "tap" was in no way meant as a criticism of anyone using it in that way. I haven't followed KTL and had not read past threads related to events referenced here but went back to see what people were talking about and kept encountering this term. I've not previously seen it used like this and was simply curious to know whether this was some standard Interweb use of which I was unaware or a KTL-ism. There's clearly some strong feelings around issues discussed here and I am definitely not intending to insult anyone (or even get involved the main discussion...

In Scotland the term "To tap someone" is slang for to borrow money from someone .

Personally the Solent films were classics. A mix of good humour, some sailing and overall fun to watch. I really cant fault his films and the absolute benefit to sailing.
