I have discovered that Dylan has the next video in his 2009 series on his web site.
It is a large download of 18 mins of High res that he is charging $0.99 for.

It is up to his usual standard.
I really can't wait to be back on the water to follow in his wake.
I commend it to the forum.

I have no connection to Dylan apart from enjoying his output.

Thanks for the link - excellent stuff. I really like his clear opinions about generators of wash and users of Jetskis!

Seconded - 99c for a download is utterly fair. Enjoyed watching it yesterday and enjoying watching it again today!

I'm a massive fan of KTL but FWIW I'm a tightwad so won't be paying 99c to watch it. Can't really explain why.

However, I'm hoping at the end of the trip there will be a DVD which I will buy for sure (if it's cheap).

A big thankyou to DW for the ones I've seen so far!

Dylan enjoyed your latest offering.

NB I would be interested to see your sheet layout - both Genoa and Main.

KeepTurningLeft DVD - non starter

Sorry to T of TH - the DVD will never happen

Making the economics of producing DVDs for such tiny numbers is impossible.

I earn my living making DVDs about farming and trucking.

Too many built in costs - mastering in all the formats available, doing the artwork for disk and case, having them professionally pressed, dealing with electronic money and labels, jiffy bags, post men, returns, non shows, destroyed in postage etc etc

Not worth doing for the few sailors who want to watch an ugly middle aged man sailing an old, ugly and non classic yacht up some of the muddiest estuaries in Britain.

Worth doing it for the 8 million tru7cking enthusiasts who watched this though

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDyx0JyHelo

as opposed to the 5,000 odd who watch a free ktl film such as this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUNTmQ004v0

so far, 50 people have clicked on the paypal button for ktl49

that is 1 per cent strike rate

Now a 1 per cent strike rate out of 5,000 is pretty poor - imagine the same from 8 million truckers though

T of TH is expresses a perfectly rational thought - if I can get something just as distracting for free and just one click of a mouse elsewhere then why pay?

And you know he is absolutely correct

Micropayments for films about sailing is probably a non starter

but its a great little experiment to be running during the dullest sailing months of the year.

PS, if any of you captains of industry out there would like to book an after dinner speaker who can tell a few self deprecating, immensely entertaining and stunningly informative stories about becoming a digital entrepenuer...... then I am your man

I too, am a massive fan of KTL, even though I don't see eye to eye with Dylan's view of 'Motor boatists, or whatever they call themselves'!!

More than happy to pay $0.99 to down load 49. The only snag is, I like to watch KTL on my nice LED TV, which has a direct link to YouTube, but not other sites. But will try. If I can down load to my computer disc, then I should be watch on my TV. Here goes, trying now.

I quite happily paid the $0.99, plugged the lappy into the tv with an hdmi lead from wilkinsons for £12 and I am happy as larry,
Keep up the good work Dylan, very interesting

that would work

How about I bring a blank DVD round & do your washing up. While I'm doing that you put all the files on my DVD? (No grill pan. I hate that.)

Excellent idea - tell you what when I get up to scotland I will give you a call - how far from the coast are you - I will save a frying pan for you

I can provide the scritcher

I'm really disappointed as you only offer PayPal which I refuse to use (I won't "register" with anything if I can avoid it and especially not an organisation that takes my credit card details).

I quite appreciate that's there's not many ways available to make the payment easily though so not having having a go.

Buggar.

very interesting. I fear that you will find the world to be an ever tougher and more expensive place to exist.

Have you seen how much cheaper anti-foul and chandlery is via the web?

At least with paypal you only hand your details to one organisation rather than lots of them.

I think I probably trust them more than I do the bloke in the garage with the acne problem and the yellow fingertips. Or even the waiter with the weird accent and a large family in Coatia.

send me £1 through the post with an email address engraved on it and I will send you back the link.

Actually i will PM you the link now in the hope that you won't pass it onto too many other people and that you will put a quid in the next RNLI box you see.

Both Paypal and Google checkout do offer Credit Card payment without registering with them. Its difficult to find as they make the link very small and keep encouraging you through the sign-up route, but its there.

However the "Merchant" has to permit it - in the "Website Payments Preference" section:

PayPal Account Optional
When this feature is turned on, your customers will go through an optimized checkout experience. This feature is available for Buy Now, Donations and Shopping Cart buttons, but not for Subscription buttons. Learn More

PayPal Account Optional:

That's interesting logic, and not that uncommon, but it is quite flawed. I'm sure you give your details to a mobile phone company, or British Gas, or BT, and I'm sure you hand your card over to the bloke in the petrol station.

These companies have very little motivation to keep your details secure. Paypal, on the other hand, does. Their business, and it's a business worth billions, is built upon trust. If they were to have a major leak it would seriously affect their share price, and we all know how the board wouldn't like that, so it's top priority to stay secure. Your details are safer there than in all the other places they are stored.

I agree with other points in part. Paypal has also screwed me over before now, but only from the perspective of being a merchant. Being the customer is just not going to lead to any problems whatsoever.

Very enjoyable videos which I have only just come across. Thanks.

I don't want you to feel that I am butting into your business, but on a Monday morning, preparing for work, your challenge of earning money from sailing videos seems much more interesting than my own day. Or maybe it's similar, because I spend a significant period of time working out ways to pay for extended cruising time too!

Anyway, I had a random thought that may have some substance.

I've recently registered and paid for a couple of digital magazines that arrive in my inbox every month or two. Since the demise of Borders Bookshop I haven't been able to get a couple of American and French sailing mags that I have enjoyed for the last couple of years. (Reading about escape adventures keeps me going whilst working hard 100 miles away from the sea.) But more relevant is the fact that I never realised the joy that I would get from 'real sailing content' arriving in my email at any time of the day or month (I'm sure there is a schedule but I am still surprised by their arrival).

And then I thought of your videos. Now I may be unusual but I am happy to subscibe to you for say a year for a sensibly reduced up front rate, if you promise to surprise me at least once per month (or whatever you are happy to commit to, like the magazines) with you latest sailing video.

The idea may only appeal to me so you would need to solicit the opinion of others, but it would help your cash flow, those who are unhappy with Paypal could send you a cheque that was worth writing, and I would have something to break up my workday every now and then. It seems to be working for the magazine boys.

It was just a thought and probably more suited to my needs than worrying about yours, but it may have benefits for both. And the forum member who wanted your compilation DVD may feel that this is an alternative too. Good value and all that.

The one thing that seems clear at the moment now that Woolies, Borders, etc etc have gone, is that the old ways of doing business may be gone forever, and we all have to explore many alternatives to doing business going forward. It's unclear which will work, so we probably have to try lots of them!

Cheers

Oh, just to add, as soon as I have 99p available in my bank account I will be purchasing a copy from Dylan. 99p is just not worth thinking about. It's nothing. What's minimum wage these days? 6 quid I'd guess, so if you work for minimum wage it'd take you ten minutes of work to get 18 minutes of entertainment. How can you argue against that, unless you don't want to watch it at all, in which case... there's no argument.
