have a spot of rot in cabin coming. So have cut out and at mo have hole in the coaming. Went to garden center and bought couple of meters of plastic and want to tape to cabin top and drape over the side to keep rain at bay. What would be the best tape to use? Common old duct tape not working.

Strange, because the bog standard Screwfix duct tape (‘cloth tape’) I buy sticks to anything and is waterproof, inc. salt water! Just wipe the surfaces down before if you can be bothered.

I’ve even patched large holes again and again while working on/around them, reusing the same pieces of tape, inc. holes in coachroof (two swan neck fittings) and even holes for skin fittings (albeit out the water!) and not a drop of moisture has got past. Quite amazing, really.

I've used b&q silver duct tape and it stuck so well it took ages and acetone to get it off. Surface needs to be clean and dry when sticking it. Even 50mm wide blue masking tape would work so long as it went down on a clean and dry surface. Many tapes don't work on a wet surface. Can you not tie it over the hole using tarpaulin clamps?

I bought a variety of duct tapes when equipping my boat - I wondered what the difference was, to justify the aforementioned premium price, and bought one of each. Also a roll of white.

I can confirm that the Gorilla is stickier - arguably it is too sticky, as the cheaper duct tape is often adequate; there must be something wrong with yours, @vic008, but I second the suggestion to try Gorilla.

Let's have bit of lateral thinking, save some money and be environmentally friendly

An alternative is to simply lay the sheet of polythene on the deck and lay 20l water bottles on top of the polythene down the deck, on top of the coachroof -any where that is reasonable flat.

The weight of the water will hold it down - and no sticky tape to dispose of later nor clean off the adhesive where it sticks to the deck.

And if you are thinking laterally you will have the answers to the inevitable killjoys
