Ribs on GRP boat

On a GRP boat, do the ribs work in compression or tension? Or neither?

Or do they just provide form for the layer of GRP over them?

They obviously help to provide form when building but they are also there to strengthen the hull. Compression would happen if something hits the boat and tension would happen if the boat exploded ;-)
