Hi,
I'm building a small gaff sailing boat and am trying to source 12mm wide S/S keelband or 1/2 round bar. I've tried several stockists but without luck. I know it exists because there was a very nice rowing boat on the Classic Boat stand at the LBS that used it. Does anyone have any idea where I might get some?

Many thanks for your help

Simon

Better than that, try the1/2in thermo plastic they use to make tanks, which can be welded. Tough, easy to cut and fit, slippery and doesn't rust. Try a plumbers for sheets of the stuff.

Hi guys

Many thanks for the prompt feedback but I like the look of polished stainless steel and none of the places mentioned so far do it. I know it exists. I just can't find it!

Cheers

Simon

Hi fluffc

Good thinking. I had assumed it was stainless but I've made a couple of calls and you're right the boat I saw got his from Classic Marine and had it chromed. Talking to Classic Marine they don't recommend chrome in general for a keelband as it soon gets knocked about. In fact I was asked that if I find some to let them know as they don't know where to get it either.

So I guess I'll have to come up with a new plan ..... unless anyone else knows where I might find some .....?

It is possible to have items chromed - there are companies around that do this sort of thing. Look in yellow pages and google.

To get a good finish, you need to have a good piece of metal to start with - the chroming won't clean up a damaged surface.
