Alderney lifeboat, along with the SNS boat Mona Rigolet, escorted a J92 'Ajena' into Braye yesterday morning. Ajena was taking on water, 10nm NW of Alderney - see news item.

Wasn't a pretty picture when they lifted her:

Great work by RNLI and CROSS to get alongside so quickly given the conditions. Glad everyone was safe - it was a horrid night to be out at sea (it was even pretty miserable on a buoy in the harbour!).

A friend of mine used to sail on a J, (40ft I think it was). Brand new and shortly after launch, they set of on the Round Ireland Race .... not long into the race, the keel started to detach and they were escorted to safety by the lifeboat.

Lots of complaints about Bavarias and their keels, but dont hear any about J boats??

You should try wandering onto a race forum...

The big difference historically is that J have a reputation for standing by their product and repairing the boats affected.

As usual a bit of urban myth creating going on here.

The Bavaria "keel problem" was just one model and only one actual failure (in Croatia) in a less than clear situation. Unforunately as far as I know there was never a formal enquiry such as would happen here, so I don't know the cause. However, all the other boats of that model were modified and strengthened by Bavaria - indeed one forumite posted photos of the modifications to his on this forum.

Although as a class and concept the "Match" series seems to have been a flop, the odd one that comes on the market usually has a strong asking price.

An aquaintance has a J 109 with a 12 inch wavey crack in the gel round his chainplates. He is telling himself it's a scratch but it isnt. certainly put me off one.

But then I've only ever owned one boat that didnt have a single gel coat crack or star craze anywhere on the hull. And thats the current one built by Bowman.
