"Kate" Taken in Harwich Harbour at silly o'clock yesterday as we left for Ostend. Anyone know the boat or owner? Even a container port can look ok in some lights!!

the rule of thirds is there for a reason. Try cropping so that the boat is 2/3 to the right and see the emotional difference it gives.

My mother was a photographer and she always said leave a space in front of the subject for movement

Fair point. although I'd be more inclined to crop the other way so the space was in front of the boat. Your principle is right of course
