We have just been to the boatshow and took a liking to the Karnic range. It seems to tick almost all our boxes.

7mt sports/fisher, outboard powered with sizeable cockpit, cuddy v-berth (albeit slightly small) place for a chem. wc, small galley. Judging by the deep V hull and generous freeboard, it looks like it should be a good seaboat, with a reasonable range (200lt tank). Build quality seems as good as any sub £30K (at least it wasn't creeking when we clambered all over it like some we saw!!)

The problem is, I've not heard/read much if anything about Karnic - they give a 10 year hull warranty, but if they disappear then that's not worth much!! I know it's a Cypriot company, but thats about it. We are based in Poole and the dealer is on our doorstep - if anyone knows anything about these boats and/or the dealer in Poole, then info would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Ian

I've dealt with the dealer Yellow Penguin in Poole quite a lot over the last couple of years. In fact they are currently repairing my own boat and have always proved enthusiastic and reliable. They have been bringing in Karnics for the past couple of years and we tested the previous 2260 when I was the editor of MBM. It was a good, solid unprententious boat that did everything it was meant to do. Personally I'd have no qualms about buying one and I am confident Yellow Penguin will provide all the back up support you need.

Thanks Hugo

Will order the test report you mention.

Having downsized from an Aquabel 33 to a 5m centre console boat!! we are keen to get back to something a tad more seaworthy, with weekending possiblities. In your opion, would an outboard powered 2250, for example be capable of making it safely to Cowes or Weymouth from Poole in say a typical SW Force 3 or 4, tackling Hurst/St Albans at slack water?

Once again, many thanks
Ian

Ian,

Essex have a nearly new one for sale (Nothing to do with me). Looks a realy solid boat and I bet it can take a wave or two. Ever since I hit my thirties I am going off sports boats and looking at these day pluggers that can go anywhere!

Let us know how you get on.

Paul

I have done several Level 2 courses on Karnics. I have to say that I've been very impressed with them. Nice seagoing boat and well laid out. Good balance between a sports boat and effective family boat. Well worth considering!

Ian - just about anything that floats and has the range will cover those waters in the right conditons; equally just about anyting under 20m could struggle in the wrong ones! From you previous craft you would know this of course.
There was a nice Blue hulled 2250 with us in Poole for a year or so and it got around fine; always looked smart too.
If you get it I would be happy to head accross to the CIs or France with you in company, in the right conditions of course!
There is absolutely no alternative to a sea trial to find out how the boat really feels - pick a spring tide and a S/SE breeze, pick your times and you will be able to assess it well.

Have just read the report from MBM and this seems to reaffirm everything we hoped, so am booking sea trial.

Does anyone know what fuel consumption a 140hp Suzuki 4 Stroke EFI is likey to give at cruising speeds on a boat like this?

Thanks
Ian

that will depend on your idea of a cruising speed!

you are going to have a very large choice of this with that rig - between 14 and 35 knots I suspect.

if the question is 'what is likely to be my most economical cruise speed and what consumption am I going to get?' then I would estimate 3gph at 15 knots or whatever speed 3000rpm gives you.

btw I think this would be an excellent choice of engine for that boat.

Ian,
I have spent many happy hours on a variety of the Karnic boats, and agree with Duncan, the Suzuki 140 is not only a great engine, very quiet, and great on the fuel, but would suit the 2250 very well. I have seen atleast 1, from memory, of newer ones with the 140. A great package
